The Four Queens follows the lives of four young women/ They are Deirdre Kavanagh daughter of Madailein Kavanagh, Dragon Queen of the West, and Botum, Daeva, and Maly Sweeney, the daughters of Jorani Sweeney, Dragon Queen of the Easy.
The story begins in their late teens and follows them through college, falling in love and marriage, and starting their families. After a time their mothers retire as Queen and one becomes the Queen of the West, and the other three eventually become the Queens of the East. The story continues to deep in their reigns.
However, the story opens not with the daughters but with the arrival in Atlanta of a young male Dragon and the problems he has for performing a good deed.
