I've seen the storm brewing on the horizon for a long time.
I have no problem with using AI to do research and to brainstorm. if you're using it to polish your work, that's great.
Softly, with the merest of touches, their lips met, a kiss so long in coming, light, almost chaste in the simplicity of the connection.
WTF? Those are certainly words.
I identified this issue quite some time ago but now it's gotten untenable for me.
There are people on the site who create stories of pure AI slop and slap their names on them. It's a bit like hiring 1,000 monkeys to type anything and then just waiting for it to write the perfect novel. It's actually never going to happen.
Not only is it plagiarism, To just tell AI to write it for you so you can put your name on it but it's the worst kind. It's like throwing dog shit all over the place that we are trying to walk.
I am not a snob. Not all stories will appeal to me. There are some poorly written stories on the site. The were written by someone who TRIED - homemade slop. I am okay with that. I can walk around it/ignore it.
I have been trying to just walk around the dog shit for some time now. I hate censorship and I hate the idea of excluding content that I might possibly enjoy.
Today an "author", who basically just went to some low-grade ai and got some cheap crap that doesn't follow even the basic rules of storytelling posted about three stories that he Auto generated as his own.
One thing that I learned is that you can not only filter out a particular author but if you go to category search, at the top there is an exclusions preference and you can pick AI generated as one of the options.
Lajeez has a detector that helps identify them and slaps that tag on there even if they don't.
It's not perfect, but if something AI wrote manages to get past the AI detector then maybe it's not bad.
There aren't enough good stories for me to have something to read all the time. I haven't found an AI generated story that would ever be enjoyable to me. They read a certain way and are always told in a vague unnatural style.
Usually there is some sort of opening line and then a closing line for each vignette, that contains some decorative language that's a dead giveaway.
"She looked to the Future, with Wonder and awe and as they started their future together".
Ai also has a tendency to use lists of three. It also has a tendency to make even the most mundane activity seem like something really fascinating.
Quite some time ago I generated a story where a guy goes to buy some Campbell's soup. I posted it as part of my blog to prove that AI generators were pretty shitty.
The other customers cheered him on as he made his way to the cash register and the guy bagging his groceries gave him a knowing glance that's soon he would be eating Chunky's. That sort of false excitement is usually another dead giveaway.
There may be a time when AI will write stuff that I might enjoy and I guess then I would give it a try but I don't enjoy dog shit. at some point, you're going to get to a point where you can't stand coming here and scanning through all of the poor titles and getting baited into clicking on the garbage.
Today was that day for me. This site was built on an idea that authors would have a place to post their stuff.
I don't enjoy every single story. There's a lot of themes that I don't get into. if they are coded and described, I don't mind them because I can just scroll past them.
Flash stories don't do anything for me. I don't like vignettes. I want to get to know the characters and fall in love with them. I can't do that in Flash. They aren't designed to do that. The solution was "Auto-exclude".
AI-generated is my only other Auto-exclude.
The AI generated ones are taking it to a whole new level. It's going to turn into an avalanche of dog shit if something isn't done to change the process.
If this guy that posted today keeps on doing it, pretty soon the site will be 30% AI slop, from him alone.
When somebody figures out how to hook up a workflow to easily open their browser and post a garbage AI story, They can autogenerate dozens of them in a day.
I don't know why they would but it's already starting to happen. My advice is just to check out of it and not step in it.
