I recall watching the “African Queen” for the very first time on a 17” TV as a kid.
I was got quite engrossed in the story until my uncle Jim (who was visiting) remarked, as Humphrey Bogart - up to his chest in water towed the boat though the swamp – “'ere I had transport those blee'in'-plants to the studio from Kew Gardens and take the buggers back again when they finished filming. Right game-‘n’-‘alf that one!”
The film didn’t lose its magic after that point, but it did teach me to look at everything I see or hear with a hefty portion of skepticism.
