I posted a bonus chapter for Phoenix Rising: Immortality Curse today It just happened, ya know.
I had it all planned out. I was going to write my normal chapter between 5000 and 6000 words. And I had it all outlined.
but the characters just weren't cooperating.
"Hey, Susan, briefly take Ariel by your inn so we can host some action there later."
"Yeah!"
"I said briefly!"
"But I haven't gotten to spend much time with Ariel. And besides our place is better than that Roasted Pig."
And of course Ariel was having none of briefly either. "How does it work to have a family of whores? And besides, I need to work with all my companions so they are ready for later quests. And susan's right; we haven't gotten much time together."
Actually Ariel was the worst. While I'm trying to stick to my outline, she's busy running around and moving her quests forward, noticing how various people and settings could help. And sticking her nose in everything
And then the guild master. Ever since Ariel told her know, she's been wanting under Ariel's skirt...
How's a writer supposed to manage.
And it wasn't better when I finally started moving on my outline. Because after the action of part one, the Roasted Pig has taken on its own significance. And everyone there wants to have their say. Hulda is excited at how Ariel has grown. And I'm not stupid enough to tell Hulda to get out of the way and make it short.
But the end is in sight. "Hey, Ariel, get together with Fyrefang3 and do your thing. But we're kind of over words already so can you make it quick."
Right! As if! "This sexual tension has been building up since chapter 5. No! Make that chapter 2, back when you made me choose. we're going to milk every last drop out of this!"
And so they did.
And then there are the AIs. But we're not going to talk about the AIs here.
And the long and the short of it was that rather than my 5,000 words, I was looking at well over 10,000 words. And I trimmed some of it, but a lot of it was good. And I like how the characters and world come through.
so anyway, the characters had their own ideas, and so we get two chapters: one today and one at the normal time on Saturday.
Thank you all for your support, and please keep the feedback coming. I love chatting with you all.
Phoenix Rising: The Immortality Curse is my first story to make it into one of the top 50 lists: in this case one of the top 50 ongoing serials by score. I'd like to thank all the readers for your support. This is a fun story to write and I'm enjoying sharing it with you all!
Today, Phoenix Rising: The Immortality Curse became my first story to reach 10,000 downloads. I'd like to give a big thanks to the readers who made that possible. I'm enjoying chatting with you over in the comments and this is a lot of fun.
If you're reading the story and haven't gotten around to voting yet, I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd take the time to pop over to the most recent chapter and do that. Votes are valuable to help me know how I'm doing and to let others find stories.
I'm toying with the idea of putting together a Phoenix Rising play list/mix. This is unsurprising: my 2019 creative projects were writing and advancing my skills as a DJ. Obviously the opening song is "Date my Avatar". The mix would include plenty of Rihanna. And on the name alone, it would need to include "Elektro Fuck Tribal Fuck Mix," which while it doesn't entirely live up to the name, isn't a half-bad track. I'd be curious to hear your ideas about what else a mix of songs to go alongside the story would include.
I've decided to move Phoenix Rising: Immortality Curse to posting once a week. The next chapter will post this Saturday rather than Thursday evening.
I have a bunch of stuff going on in my life besides writing. I'm the Project Leader for Debian Linux, a group of a few thousand volunteers getting together to make one of the best Linux operating systems. I have a job where I split my time between the infrastructure behind cyber defense training environments and collaberative interfaces inspired by the movie Minority Report. And then of course there are BDSM events and other fun stuff.
Which is to say, I'm busy having lots of fun real world experiences trying to keep growing and evolving in how I think about computers and sexuality. All that's great for putting me in a position to write interesting stories like Immortality Curse. But it does take up time.
I find that the challenge of keeping up with two chapters a week is getting in the way of meeting my other commitments.
So, I'm going to slow down a bit to one chapter.
The story is going well, and I cannot wait to share it with you.
I'd also like to thank those of you who have participated in the discussion we've got going in the comments. It's interesting and gives me new things to think about.
Chapter 19 posts Tuesday. This is another good one for people interested in game mechanics and the interface.
we get a good look into how it works when magic starts to mess with a player's mind.
It's fun to get practice writing characters who aren't fully aware of what is going on around them. I think I'm getting better, and I definitely appreciate your feedback.
Thanks for all the comments; the discussion has been interesting and I feel engaged with the readers!
