Rewrite?

Posted at Updated:

So I've rewritten stories before, mostly in the process of trying to break writers block for the next chapter, however, I'm now considering now that I've been an erotic writer for 11 years going back and rewriting the first story I ever wrote, fixing all the typos and basically making it better with how I've grown as a writer.

CLARIFICATION: a few of the responses I've gotten seem to be missing a key point. I'm talking about rewriting a story that was published originally in 2007, not anything I have done recently.

Do you as a reader value this?

Writers, do you find any point to doing it or do you just leave the past alone and only concentrate on new stories?

I really mean that.

The second erotic story I ever wrote was the first chapter of a longer story about a high school track star who got herself in trouble and found herself blackmailed in the process. Chapter 1 was written in 2007. I took a break from writing, and chapter 2 came out in 2009.

Then came the dreaded chapter 3. The story was a 5-part arc, and I started writing chapter 3. Then I deleted it. Then I started again, then I deleted it. This process repeated 4 times. Then I shelved it.

In 2013/2014 I started to rewrite the first 2 chapters, hoping an expanded story with more experience under my belt would give me inspiration for chapter 3. I posted the story here at that point. Well, it worked. It did, until it didn't.

I went through the same process again and again and again. And no, I wouldn't just jump to chapter 4 instead, cause I was stubborn like that.

Then the last 2 days happened and I came up with a new idea that incorporated elements of my previous ideas, and started at the end of the aborted chapter 3 after the rewrites.

It has been the most frustrating story to write, 10 years since the original first chapter, and 8 since the second, and 3 since the rewrite but fucking finally it's done!

Hopefully the next delay will be shorter.

Also, there's gonna be a chapter 6 I think

While I am sad that my first ever nomination did not result in me placing, I'm still thrilled that someone even thought to nominate a story of mine. Congrats to all the winners!

So back at the beginning of 2014 I set a goal of being nominated by even one person for a Clitorides Award for something I wrote.

Fast forward to an email this morning and I learned that a story of mine published late in 2015 was not only nominated, but is actually being voted on for an award.

My story, Dignity, Gone in a flash is currently up for voting as Flash Erotic Story of the Year @ The Clitorides Awards (it's the first story category you come across as you log in to vote).

Shoutout to Steve who alerted me, those who nominated me, and the anonymous poster who pointed out how I should have done this blog entry the first time.

Isn't it ironic?

I think I got more feedback on the question of feedback than I have on my stories in their entirety. Thank you all who did respond!!!!

The big one I learned--most people won't send feedback unless it's negative :S (Edit: I learned that from the responses to my prior blog, not from getting negative feedback--though in general I'd appreciate feedback on my stories, positive or negative).
