This story is about a boy named Wesson (Wess). Wess has one of the worst childhoods that you could imagine. You could say, without bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all. Then, with the help of CJ, he learns that he can use magic. Now he just has to learn how to use this magic and figure out how the shed his curse of bad luck.
There are a few things to remember about this story. Magic users are called Wessiers, after the great Wessillious. Everyone associated with magic can trace their lineage back to him. All of the original Wessiers are reincarnated as the first child of magic lineage to be conceived after they die. Wesson is the latest incarnation of the great Wessillious. Calling a Wessier any other name such as witch, wizard, warlock, or mage is derogatory and they will be insulted.
The two main characters are thirteen years old. This can be an awkward time in anyone's life. No matter what happens in the story, they do love each other but not in a romantic or sexual way. Though their relationship goes beyond friendship, they will not have an adult relationship untill they are old enough to do so.
