Cuise Control is out. A man's wife gets pulled off his company's cruise at the last minute, and right as he's grinning about being off the leash for once, no wife, no ring, nobody watching, his teenage draughter talks her way into her mother's spot. What he doesn't tell her: the cabin's booked for a couple. One bed. Twelve days on open water and nowhere for her to go. It's a mean one, the villain in the driver's seat the whole way, and you spend the entire book locked in his head, so you don't get one inch of distance from what he does out there. Fifteen chapters, first-person, complete. No rescue. No happy ending. Just an ending. It's up now, start to finish.

And the new one I've only just started is called In Her Face.

A woman named Robin dies young and leaves three people who can't let her go: the husband who still reaches for her in the dark, the best friend who loved her quietly her whole life and married the widower just to stay close to what was left of her, and the daughter who barely knew her and would give anything to.

So the daughter goes looking. And there's exactly one place her mother is still warm and breathing, and it's her own grieving father. Here's the part I couldn't stop writing: she teaches herself to be Robin. The voice off old home videos, the tilt of the head, the way her mother went first at everything. She studies the dead woman until she can walk into the dark and be the wife he's grieving. And he lets her. God, does he let her.

It goes all the way. No fade, no flinch, wrong in ways that are going to sit with you for a while. And under all the heat it's a sad one, because every one of the three of them knows exactly what they're doing to each other and not one of them can stop. Somebody bleeds for it. Somebody doesn't make it out whole. But somebody, for once, gets a door that opens instead of one that closes.

Cruise Control

A scheduling conflict pulls Frank's wife off his company's cruise retreat at the last minute, and just as he's picturing a week off the leash — no wife, no ring, nobody watching — his teen daughter talks her way into her mother's spot instead. What he doesn't mention: the cabin's booked for a couple. One bed. A week on open water, and nowhere for her to go.

There's another father-daughter pair aboard he can't stop watching, for reasons he won't let himself name.

Twelve chapters, first-person, Frank's POV start to finish. You don't leave his head, which means you don't get any distance from what he does with the week.

When I posted Spelunked I said it might grow into a series if the characters had room. They did. The last of it is up now — seven parts, start to finish. It's done.

I kept these as one-shots on purpose, not chapters — each one a complete moment that stands on its own. There's more on why in the End Note on the final part; I won't rerun it here.

The bucket-list thing I do — pick a direction I've never gone and make myself go there — this time it wasn't the subject, it was the voice. A narrator who won't tell you how to feel. Who doesn't fully understand what's happening to her, and leaves the important things unsaid so you have to sit in the gap. Restraint as the whole method, all the way to an ending that doesn't resolve. It's the hardest register I've tried, and I'm genuinely not sure I landed all of it.

That's the part I'd actually like to hear about — not whether you liked the people (you're not supposed to), but whether the writing worked. What landed, what fell flat.

I'm dropping the final parts together on purpose. The arc is built to close as one thing; read it that way, not a week apart.

SOL doesn't support series linking, so I'm keeping the reading order here.

One Shots: Alicia is a series of explicit stories told in the first person by Alicia, Cole's younger teenage sister. Each story follows her relationship with her older brother across different encounters — starting with a camping trip and moving forward from there. Stories can be read standalone but build on each other and are best read in order.

Reading Order

Content Note

Spelunked contains non-consent/rape. Together and Reckless do not — Alicia's choices are her own from that point forward.

Willing isn't the same as informed consent — that tension is the point of the story, not something I'm unaware of.

All three: explicit, incest, underage, first person, unprotected sex.

Reckless is currently in progress. Whether the series continues depends on whether there's more story worth telling — Reckless may well be a natural endpoint.
