The Premise

Rafael becomes her connection to the father she never knew. Her confidant. Her protector from afar.
Every word is a lie.
Rafael IS Esme's father. He raped her mother Carmen when she was sixteen—his own sister. Carmen has spent fifteen years trying to shield Esme from this horror, telling her nothing about her father, ensuring she has no contact with Rafael.
But silence creates a void. And Rafael fills it with stories.
Then Abuela Rosa makes her move. She arranges for Esme to accompany her on an Extended Family Visit—elderly woman with accessibility needs, teenage granddaughter as caregiver. Guards wave them through with sympathy.
It's a trap Rosa set fifteen years in the making.
By the time Esme discovers the truth—that there never was a best friend who died, that he raped her mother, that every story was fabricated—she's already in love with him.
And she's already pregnant.

At thirty, she has four children. Luna—her oldest—is fourteen.
COVID kept them from visiting for three years. Luna was eleven the last time she saw Papi in person. Now she's fourteen. She's begging to visit him again. She misses him. She wants to see him.
She doesn't understand that she's not eleven anymore.
Esme sees what Luna doesn't. Rafael sees it too. And when he asks for Luna specifically. When the prison approves the visit—

This one is about a man who doesn't need to escape. He just waits. And they keep coming back.
The horror isn't the violence. The horror is the choices. Carmen chooses silence to protect Esme—and creates the void Rafael exploits. Rosa chooses her son over her daughter and granddaughter. Esme chooses to believe the stories because the truth destroys her identity.
And at thirty, Esme makes another choice. Not the same as Rosa's. Not the same as Carmen's. But it fails just the same.
This is about how cycles perpetuate through choices that seem right at the time—or impossible, or inevitable, or the only way to survive what you can't change.

This one is different for me. Longest thing I've written. A fully consensual relationship told across four years — which meant real character development, real consequences, real change. I didn't want to write another compressed intensity story. I wanted to see if I could make a reader care about the same people across four years and seventeen chapters without losing momentum — not just Vic and her father, but everyone in her life.
I don't know if I pulled it off. That's for you to decide.
But it's the most ambitious thing I've attempted. And I went somewhere I haven't been before.

Raw Draft
A literary coming-of-age novel about a teenage girl who initiates a relationship with her father at fourteen—told entirely from her perspective across four years. Not as trauma or cautionary tale, but as she experiences it: transactional at first, then intimate, then complicated by guilt, friendship, ambition, and the question of what she's willing to sacrifice for what she wants.
Victoria Harris is fourteen, wants to be a writer, and thinks she's figured out how the world works.
Transactions. The senior girls in the bathroom talking about their boyfriends: As long as I'm sweet about it, he'll give me whatever I want. Her father's eyes following her when she wears short shorts. The way proximity becomes possibility when her mother works night shifts at the hospital.
Vic is smart. Observational. She sees the pattern and decides to use it.
What starts as transactional—a hug for twenty dollars, sitting close during movies, escalating carefully to see if he'll follow—becomes something else entirely. By spring of freshman year, they're in a Vegas hotel room. By sophomore year, she's taking Plan B in parking lots. By junior year, she's the one lifting the condom boundary because she trusts him now.
But it's not simple.
Her best friend Madison is going through something similar with her uncle. Gets pregnant at fifteen. Needs an abortion and can't tell anyone. Vic's father drives them to the clinic—two hours away, pays cash, no conditions. Vic watches Madison afterward, broken in ways Vic doesn't feel broken, and starts questioning what the difference is between them.
Her father's breeding kink intensifies. Gonna fill you up. Gonna get you pregnant. Words that make them both lose control. Except when you're having unprotected sex on day twelve, they're not just words anymore.
Her mother is upstairs. Or at work. Or asleep. And Vic is sneaking to her father's office at midnight, tracking her cycle, living two completely separate lives. The guilt starts eating at her—not about what she's doing with her father, but about what she's doing to her mother.
This is a story about a girl who thought she understood transactions—and spent four years discovering that nothing about love, sex, family, or choice is that simple.
