This chapter is meant to show what has been going on in Katherine's mind under her seemingly quiet and pious demeanor. Well, actually she had been faking her Catholic piety for quite a while by the time she gets involved with Paul and Renée. Her fantasy is based on the character of an eighteen-year-old girl in a novel she has read.
This is partially a prequel to "My Summer With Nora," although there is some overlap. The major difference is that the serial is from Paul's point-of-view, while this story is entirely from hers. She describes her early days at City College in 1973 and her almost accidental first foray into campus prostitution. It continues well into 1974, when she has met Paul and quit her previous "profession" as described in the serial.
Perhaps feeling guilty about their ambivalent feelings about Joanne, Katherine and Paul cover it over with kinky sex in the basement of their office building.
Katherine and Paul confront Joanne on the following day. However, they both realize that they have some uncomfortable thoughts about her that they can't admit to each other. Katherine, however, deals with it by giving in to her kinky side and requesting some "discipline" for her guilt about having these secret desires.
Katherine and Paul unwisely attempt oral sex at the office one night, and they get caught. But the results are not what they expected.
