One of my readers mentioned that he, among others may not understand when I refer to Indian clothing or jewelry in my stories, especially if I don't provide any description of additional context. That's important feedback for me, something I assured my reader that I will pay attention to, going forward.
Meanwhile, per this reader's recommendation I am posting a description of some typical Indian clothes and Jewelry. Perhaps I'll add a story with an illustration if that's of interest to readers.
Women's Clothing:
Sari/Saree - A long unstitched fabric (5-9 yards) draped around the body, typically over a petticoat and blouse
Blouse/Choli - Fitted upper-body garment worn with a sari
Petticoat/Ghagra - Waist-to-ankle underskirt worn beneath a sari
Dupatta - Long decorative scarf/shawl draped over shoulders or head
Salwar Kameez - Tunic top (kameez) with loose trousers (salwar), often worn with a dupatta
Lehenga/Ghagra - A long, flared embroidered skirt, often worn for ceremonies
Churidar - Tight-fitting trousers with excess fabric at the ankles
Pallu - The decorated end of a sari draped over the shoulder
Men's Clothing:
Kurta - Loose-fitting tunic, typically knee-length
Dhoti - Unstitched cloth wrapped around waist and legs
Lungi - A tube of cloth wrapped around the waist
Sherwani - Formal long coat-like garment worn over kurta
Undergarments/Intimate:
Brazier/Bra - Often still called "blouse" in context; modern Indian women wear standard bras
Panty - Standard Western-style; traditional contexts may reference lack thereof under certain garments
Jewelry/Accessories:
Mangalsutra - Sacred necklace worn by married women
Jhumkas - Earrings, typically ornate and medium to large sized.
Bindi - Decorative mark on forehead
Bangles/Churis - Rigid bracelets worn in pairs
Anklet/Payal - Ankle jewelry, often with small bells
Nath - Nose ring, traditionally worn on the left nostril
