Future's Path is Finished

Posted at

That's right, it's time for me to stop my compulsive tweaking and editing, and just post the damned thing. I have submitted chapters twelve through fifteen, and as soon as they clear the moderation queue, you'll be able to read them.

Thank you to everyone who has read, voted, and commented. FP's download count is now well into the four thousands, and the number makes me feel good every time I look at it. I get a kick looking at the score too, a little up, a little down, a little more down. *grin* Overall, you guys have been incredibly generous with your ratings and comments though, and that's why I'm writing this paragraph. Thank you!

What comes next? LOL For a little while, not much of anything. When I come back from the dead, I'll post here and let you know what I'm up to.

Chapters Eight Through Eleven are Posted

Posted at Updated:

The biggest news, at least for past FP readers, is that everything from chapter nine onward is all new content. Over six years, I think any author's style will change a bit, at least if they're trying to add to their abilities, but I made a conscious effort to try and keep my writing the same throughout. Hopefully, I succeeded.

My embarrassing battle with homophones continues, and I offer sincere thanks to the reader who pointed out my fumbles regarding "past" and "passed." I think I've got them all fixed now.

Finally, I'd like to say a few things about chapter eleven (I don't think there are any major spoilers, but you might want to go read it and then come back if you haven't done so already.) Originally, when writing Future's Path, I envisioned it as a fair-sized novella sufficient unto itself. In other words, I didn't make any plans for additional stories in the same universe. At that time, I preferred to only write short stories, and hadn't ever taken on a larger writing project. Since then, I've become more comfortable with larger works, and after a bit of consideration, decided to add to the FP storyline, in an attempt to make Gavin's and Elena's world a bit more complex. As a result, one of my minor characters became much more important to the story, and if I did it right, made things more interesting to the reader as well. As desired, it also opened up a lot of future possibilities, not to mention ways I can mess with my two major protagonists. That's rule number one of mine for coming up with an engaging storyline, imagine the worst possible thing that can happen to a character, and then do it to them.

As always, I hope you enjoy the latest installment of FP, and encourage you to send me a note if you have any comments.

Chapters Four through Seven Are Up

Posted at Updated:

Because I knew I would be traveling for work today, I actually set up this section of FP to post yesterday. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at my hotel, and it still hadn't gone up. I didn't realize that delayed stories are set up to post after 8:00 pm. Ah well, live and learn.

For previous FP readers, this is the section where I started adding a good bit of additional material. I think that one of the hardest things for authors to realize and specifically plan for is the fact that readers only know what you tell them about the storyline, the characters, and the conflicts they will eventually have to resolve. I know, it sounds ridiculously obvious, until you start looking back over what you've written, and realize that you've neglected to describe something that will end up being very important. So, I did a bit of that, and tried to add in a bit more background and character development as well.

The next release of Future's Path will include chapters eight through eleven, and should go up Sunday morning.

Please send me a note and let me know what you think so far. All feedback is appreciated.

Editing Thanks

First, thank you to everyone who has read, voted, and sent me comments about Future's Path. The story seems to be doing pretty well so far, and that's obviously because of your support.

A special word of thanks goes out to the reader who kindly alerted me to an embarrassing bit of homophone confusion. (Peddle verses pedal.) I do know the difference, honest, but you really wouldn't believe the crazy crap that comes out of my brain and subsequently gets transmitted to the keyboard when I'm writing sometimes. Thankfully, it was only in one chapter, and has been corrected.

That having been said, if you're good at finding grammar and sentence structure mistakes, and also think you'd enjoy a part-time job saving me from myself, please send me a message. I know I've sort've buried this request, but rather than just picking someone at random from SOL's available editor list, I'd like to partner with someone who is actually a fan of my writing.

Again, a sincere thank you to everyone for their support of Future's Path.

Future's Path is Live

More accurately, I've just submitted FP's first four parts, the prologue through chapter three, to SOL for posting, so it should be live soon. What began as a writing experiment in 2007 is, believe it or not, almost finished.

For those of you who are reading FP for the very first time, I hope you enjoy it. I welcome constructive criticism, so please send me a note if there's anything you'd like to say. Remember, feedback is an author's life blood, and more than once, it's guided me down the path to become a better writer.

If you're not new to FP, welcome back. As mentioned in my previous blogs, I've made editing changes throughout the story, but in this first section, I haven't really changed all that much. Chapter four was where I really started adding new content to go along with what was already there, but if you keep your eyes open, you may notice a few sentences I've tweaked in this section to make the story flow better.

I will post chapters four through seven on Thursday. As always, your comments are welcome.

Happy reading.
