"Alfred Marshall illustrated two ways in which ceteris paribus can be used to consider the effects of some causes of isolation."

"Ceteris paribus?" Jack muttered to himself, as he reread the sentence. "What the hell is ceteris paribus?"

He pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration as he flipped back to the index of his Microeconomics textbook. He knew this stuff. He'd read the words many times before, but for some reason he just couldn't remember what it meant. Was it possible to over-study? He traced down the page with his finger, trying to find the entry. A pad of paper flapped down on top of his hand.

He glanced up at the person sitting next to him at the library table. Heidi flashed him a cute expectant smile, clearly anxious to see his reaction. He picked up the pad, leaned back in his chair, and began to read. A quick scan showed she had completed all of the review questions he gave her to answer. The final was two days away, so this was the last tutoring session they had together.

He could barely keep his smile away as he read through her answers. She got it. She really, truly understood the concepts they were supposed to learn. She'd struggled early, but when she began focusing and taking it seriously, things started to fall into place for her. His primary challenge in tutoring her was keeping her on task, which wasn't always easy, but now she finally got it.

He looked at her again and tossed the paper in front of her, but didn't say anything.

She furrowed her brow. "Well?"

"Well, what? You did a good job."

"That's it? Aren't you going to mark it up like you always do, tell me what I got wrong, and what I need to work on?"

"Nope."

"Why not?"

"I don't need to. You got everything right. Good job."

Her eyes went wide when he finally smiled. She let out a squeal and, amid shushes from other patrons, she catapulted herself at him. She surprised him and he barely caught her, one arm wrapping harmlessly around her waist and the other positioned so his hand cupped her tight little ass. Before he could react, she grabbed him behind his ears and planted a fat kiss on his lips.

It took a second for his brain to catch up, but when it did, he quickly released her and clamped on her wrists to pull her hands free. She quickly leaned back and gasped in shock. Her hands went to cover her face, which blushed hotly, and she sank back into her chair.

"Oh my God, Jack ... Mr. Williams, I'm so sorry!"

Jack chuckled. "It's OK, Heidi. I think we can agree that you are exuberant because of your success."

She nodded and uncovered her eyes. The intense fire that burned in them made Jack's cock stir. He blushed and began to gather his things, suddenly anxious to get out of there before she noticed his body's reaction to her. He could resume his studying at home. With Analise and Josh moving out a couple of weeks earlier, things were relatively placid there.

"Well, I guess that's it," he said. "Make sure you look things over again for the exam, and be sure to get some good sleep in between now and then."

"Oh, I need more," she begged, excitedly. "Give me some more questions."

Jack chuckled again. "You're FINE, Heidi. You'll do great on the exam. Besides, it's getting late."

Heidi suddenly tensed. "What time is it?"

Jack stopped what he was doing and fixed his gaze on her. "What's wrong?"

"What time is it?" she asked again, with a slight panic to her voice.

Jack looked at his cell phone. "Um, 5:34."

Her eyes flew open in fear. "Oh, shit!" she groaned quietly. She began shoving books and papers haphazardly into her backpack. "Fuck, fuck, fuck..."

"Heidi..."

"My God, he's going to be SO pissed!"

"Heidi, wait..."

She stuffed the last of her things in her bag, not bothering to zip it shut, and started to rise. Jack grabbed her arm.

"Heidi, stop this," Jack said, quietly. He cast some looks around to see what kind of attention they were getting, but received only a few disinterested glances in return.

"Let go of me, Jack. I need to go."

"Not until you tell me what's wrong."

"Nothing's wrong."

"Bullshit, Heidi. Tell me what's going on." His commanding voice stilled her, though her eyes were still fearful.

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "My boyfriend, he ... he wanted to get together with some friends this evening, you know, just hang out. He told me to be home at 5:30. I'm going to be so fucking late and he is going to be so fucking pissed."

Warning bells were going off inside Jack's head, but he tried to keep a lid on his mounting anger. He knew what her 'boyfriend' could do when he was 'pissed'; he'd seen the damage to this girl firsthand.

"You're just a little late. Why don't you call him and let him know you're on your way?"

Heidi looked away, her lip trembling. "It won't matter. He can't stand it when I'm late to these ... things, and he can't stand excuses."

Jack leaned in and forced Heidi to look him in the eye. "He can't stand it when you DISOBEY him. Isn't that more like it?"

She had tears in her eyes now. "Mr. Williams, please." She winced and whimpered. "Mr. Williams, let me go. Y-You're hurting me."

Jack looked down and in surprise noticed his hand wrapped tightly around her wrist. He loosened his grip, but didn't let go. "Sorry." His expression softened a bit. "Heidi, you don't have to go with him. I can find a place for you to go where you can be safe, where you don't have to worry about him hurting you anymore. You can press charges—"

She was shaking her head adamantly, looking towards the exit. "You don't understand. It's not the way you think. I love him and he loves me. He just wants me to live up to my potential and he doesn't like it when I don't, that's all." She turned her pleading eyes back to Jack. "Please, just forget it, OK? I just really need to get going."

Jack struggled with himself. Physically, he could make her go with him. If he did that, though, he was no better than her boyfriend, not to mention it would likely do more harm than good. She was beyond listening to reason, her panic too strong for her to think calmly, and she would probably resent Jack's action. He reluctantly let his hand drop. She quickly stood up.

"Heidi, look at me." His tone again brooked no argument, and she did as he commanded. Jack hardened his expression.

"If he hurts you again, that's it. I won't stand back anymore and let him treat you that way."

She hesitated for a second, then turned and raced away, throwing one worried glance back in his direction before she disappeared down the stairs.

Abigail followed Allison up the steps to their apartment, thoroughly enjoying the view of her baby sister's swaying hips and tight, little butt. If she didn't have her arms full of bags from the scrapbooking store, she'd reach out and grab a handful of cheek, but that would have to wait until later. They walked into the warm confines of their home, a nice contrast from the cold drizzle they just walked through. Abigail wondered when they last saw the sun; probably not since before Halloween, more than four months earlier. For all the glory of the summer, Seattle was definitely earning its rainy reputation now.

Jack was sitting in his usual spot at the dining room table, books spread out before him. He was looking down at the book, but wasn't moving. Abigail wondered if he was sleeping sitting up, a very real possibility given the lack of sleep he'd had the last few days as he prepared for finals. She smiled.

"Hey, Sweetie," she said gently, as she set her bags on the table beside him. He lifted his head slowly, and it took a second before he smiled at her.

"Hey, Sexy," he said.

"How's the studying going?"

He looked down at his books and shrugged. "It's going."

Allison stepped up behind him and rubbed his shoulders as she leaned in and gave him a sweet kiss. She'd already dropped her bags on the table.

"How was your tutoring session with your student?"

His brow furrowed, his expression unreadable to Abigail.

"You OK, Jack?" she asked, bending down to give him a kiss, as well.

He seemed to visibly snap out of whatever funk he was in and nodded towards his books. "Just can't seem to concentrate. I've decided that I'm at my best when I'm cramming before an exam."

Abigail winked at Allison. "I agree, you ARE at your best when you're cramming."

Allison and Jack both laughed, but before Jack could fire back some witty comment, Allison did her own version of cramming by shoving her tongue down his throat. Abigail sat down in the chair at the end of the table and started emptying her bag. When their kiss got more involved, she kicked Jack in the shin.

"Hey," he grimaced, "I don't like the way you play footsies."

"Allison and I have a project to work on, so there's no time for any hanky-panky." She smiled sweetly at Allison, who took the seat at the opposite end and began to empty her bags.

"Hanky-panky?" Jack asked, his eyebrow raised, "Who uses that word anymore?"

Abigail dismissed his jibe with a wave of her hand. "Why thank you, Sir. It's so nice of you to offer to take a break and help us scrapbook," she teased. "Why don't you fetch the tub of photos from our room, and then we can get started."

Jack grunted something intelligible before going to retrieve the pictures. He set the tub on the floor next to Abigail and then surprised her with a hot kiss of her own. Contrary to her earlier words, her body responded as Jack's lips massaged hers and his tongue explored the humid confines of her mouth. He pulled away—entirely too soon, in her opinion—and plopped back in his seat, leaving her breathless.

The trio went to work designing, cutting, taping, and talking. Mixed into the casual banter were pleasant reminisces about one thing or another. Abigail smiled as she watched her lovers work. Her heart was happy, and at this moment, she could actually think about her infertility without falling into total despair. As long as she had these two wonderful people in her life, she could be happy.

After a half an hour or so, she realized Jack had fallen out of the conversation. She looked up at him and found him staring out the windows that lined the dining room wall in front of him. She reached out and took his hand, startling him from his trance.

"OK, Honey, out with it. What's got you so distracted?"

Jack sighed and was quiet for a minute as he thought about what he wanted to say. She didn't press him, but held his hand and waited patiently. An itch of worry grew up in the back of her mind the longer she waited, but he finally sighed again.

"I'm really worried about Heidi Stone, the girl I'm tutoring," he said. "This afternoon, everything was going well and we ran longer than normal. She started freaking out about being late, about how her boyfriend was going to be so pissed at her."

"Maybe there's a history of her standing him up or something," Abigail countered, but she was pretty sure there was much more to the story. Jack was already shaking his head.

"This went beyond being afraid he'd be a bit irritated." Jack leaned forward. "I mean, she was scared, Abbie. She was absolutely petrified about what he was going to do to her. Having seen what he's done to her before, I have to admit I was pretty alarmed, too."

"Did you try to stop her?" Allison asked, her eyes wide. She obviously remembered Jack's description of her previous injuries.

"I told her I could help her, that she didn't have to go with him, but when I pushed a little bit, she clammed up and begged me to just let her go. In the end, I told her if he hurt her again, I wasn't going to let it rest." Jack sighed in frustration, "I was half-tempted to follow her."

Abigail thought that would have been a really good idea. "Why didn't you?"

He hesitated a second. "I, uh, I didn't want to cross the line any more than I already had, you know? I'm her teacher and I was already prying."

Abigail watched Jack's nonverbal communication. His words gave a reason, but everything else screamed there was something else that stopped him.

She shook her head. "I doubt that you would have given up because of some protocol if you really feared for her, as it's obvious you did. I don't buy it."

She saw him quickly glance at Allison and then lower his head. He started to fiddle with the tape dispenser, and Abigail knew she'd hit it right on the head.

"Jaaack," she said slowly, "Why didn't you follow her?"

Without raising his head, he quietly said, "I was about ready to pick up my stuff and follow her, but then I thought of you, and worried about what you would think if I did."

Abigail furrowed her brow in confusion. What would she have to do with whether or not Jack helped someone who was obviously in distress? When she didn't say anything, Jack hurried on.

"I mean, I wasn't sure whether you'd be OK with me getting involved in something like this. I didn't want you to, um, be pissed."

Abigail leaned back in surprise. "Why would I get pissed?"

Jack looked up at Abigail, his expression still unsure. "Um, because she's an attractive young woman, who expressed some sexual attraction to me in the past."

Abigail was shocked. Surely he wasn't saying what she thought he was saying. She frowned.

"You think I would be so shallow, Jack?!" she asked, testily. "I don't give a damn about whether she is an attractive young woman! She obviously needed help."

Jack's looked like he didn't quite believe her, and that made her madder.

"He's got a point, Abigail," Allison quietly said.

"What?" Abigail was reeling, "What do you mean?"

Allison's eyes looked sincerely apologetic. "I'm sorry, Abbie, but there is kind of a history of you getting a bit ... emotional when it involves Jack and another woman, no matter how innocent the circumstances."

Abigail was about to snap back, but then she froze. Allison was right, to some extent. She HAD gotten pissed in other situations, but rarely was it for the reasons Allison and Jack were suggesting. Other than the situation with Mariah, his ex-girlfriend who tried to seduce him, but whom he helped as a FRIEND, her anger was usually because of some other feeling or emotion, not because she didn't trust Jack. But Jack couldn't really know that for sure, and she felt suddenly contrite.

She stood up and stepped beside Jack. He looked up at her face. God, how she loved this man. He was so handsome, considerate, and loving. He was funny, smart, and strong—emotionally and physically. She took his face in her hands and tried to will as much love as possible through her touch.

"Jack, I know my behavior has been confusing, and for that I'm sorry. I've been an emotional mess, but you need to believe me when I say that other than the misunderstanding with Mariah, I've never distrusted you. I know the kind of man you are, and I've said it before: for better or worse, you WILL try to save the world, one girl at a time. I think there is something inside you that can't stand the thought of a girl going through what your mother went through, and so you've become a champion of distressed females everywhere. Never, ever wonder what I would think if you aid a woman in need. I promise that I'll always give you the benefit of the doubt, and I'll stand beside you no matter the repercussions." She looked up at Allison and smiled. "Allison has permission to let me know if I'm getting bitchy about it."

She turned her eyes back to his, hoping he saw the sincerity of her words. He gave her a little nod and she pressed her lips to his, holding it long enough so he could feel her sincerity. She pulled back and nodded.

"Now, we need to track Heidi down. Do you know her phone number?"

It took Jack a second to catch up to her, but when he did, he reached for his backpack. Abigail sat down while he dug up the number. She looked at Allison, who smiled sweetly and mouthed, 'I love you.'

Jack pulled out an index card that was covered with flowery, feminine handwriting and lots of cutesy little doodles, including a fair number of hearts. Abigail couldn't help but smile, but then she remembered Heidi's circumstances and sobered at the thought.

Jack reached for his cell phone, but Abigail grabbed it first.

"I should call, just in case her boyfriend is there. He might not be able to handle her getting a call from a guy with such a sexy voice."

Jack smirked. Allison sighed dramatically, and mimed fanning herself. Abigail punched the number and waited.

"Hello," came a girl's voice.

"Heidi?

"Nope. This is Rose; Heidi's not here."

"Oh. Do you know when she'll be back?"

"Haven't a clue. She wasn't here when I got home, and it's not all that uncommon for her stay out all night. She probably with Midas."

"Midas?"

There was a pause. "Who is this?"

"I'm ... Abigail. I know Heidi from school."

"Huh. Well, Midas is Heidi's boyfriend, if that's what you want to call him." The disgust was obvious in her tone. "That's not his real name, of course, but he thinks everything he touches is golden, so that's the name I use. There are worse things I could call him, and probably have."

Abigail smiled. "Um, you don't happen to have a number for him? Or do you know his real name?"

"It's Mike something-or-other and no, I don't have a number. You want me to tell Heidi you called?"

Abigail thought about that for a moment. "No, that's alright. I'll just see her later."

They ended the call and Abigail set the phone down.

"Not home, huh?" Allison asked. Abigail shook her head.

"I'll just have to keep an eye out for her tomorrow," Jack said. "If I don't see her tomorrow, I should still see her at her final the next day."

Abigail took Jack's hand. "If that jerk has done anything to her, you need to do whatever you can to get her to come with you."

"What if she doesn't show up?"

"Then we need to do everything we can to find her."

Jack sat at his desk and tried to study, but his mind wasn't on it. He looked around the classroom as his students labored over the exam. Already 10 minutes into the exam, and Heidi still hadn't arrived. Just as he put his head back down, a sound brought his eyes back up. Heidi had just slipped into a desk at the back of the room, her head down. She'd picked up the exam off the back and was quickly working on it. Jack thought about confronting her, but decided to wait until after the exam.

He still couldn't concentrate on his studying. His gaze kept going back to the diminutive girl. As students began to complete the exam and leave the room, Jack got antsy, hoping that Heidi would finish last so he could talk to her in private. Eventually, Heidi and another student were the last two, and he breathed a sigh of relief when they rose together. As was the practice, the students would just turn their exams face down on the back table next to the classroom door before they left. Jack came around his desk to approach Heidi before she could leave.

"Heidi," he called to her as she put her test on the table. She looked at him, and a sudden fury surged through him. She had a nasty shiner, even though she attempted to cover the bruising around her eye with makeup. A split second after making eye contact, she quickly turned her head and ducked out of the room right behind the other student.

"Heidi!" Jack called again, as he quickened his stride. Before he could even reach the back table, a large figure darkened the doorway.

"Mr. Williams, doing well I hope."

Jack was startled to see Dr. Franklin, his advisor, standing in front of him. He hesitated for just a moment, torn between chasing after Heidi and giving his advisor a respectful audience. Dr. Franklin didn't give him the chance to choose, however. He immediately thrust a manila folder at Jack. Jack looked at the folder, then at the door, and with a sigh, he took the folder from the older man.

"I ... I'm fine, Dr. Franklin," he replied, as he opened the folder.

"I took the liberty of adjusting your course schedule for next term."

Jack tried to clear his mind and focus on the papers in front of him. "What? Why?"

"Your electives weren't in line with your long term objectives, so I dropped you from two of them, and added you to a couple of courses from the Criminology department."

Jack read the add/drop forms, and then reread them, feeling his frustration mounting.

"I went over my schedule with Dr. Weiss and he signed off on it," Jack replied, tersely.

Earlier in the year, the agreement had been that Dr. Weiss would continue to mentor and advise Jack since it was Dr. Weiss who was handling Jack's teaching assistantship. Dr. Franklin wasn't going to take over full advising until the start of Jack's second year, which was still months away.

"Just a little forward thinking. You are woefully deficient in forensics."

"I could have just taken these in the summer." Jack tried not to let his irritation show, but he was pretty sure he failed.

"They aren't offered in the summer, and waiting until the fall would set you back several months. With these classes out of the way, you can assume greater responsibility sooner rather than later."

Jack glanced again at the door.

"Am I keeping you from something, Mr. Williams?"

'Yeah, you are, ' Jack thought. He mentally shook his head. The faster he could get away from Franklin, the better chance he had of finding Heidi. He smiled at his professor.

"No, no." He held the folder up. "Thanks for the help."

Dr. Franklin frowned and looked intently at Jack, as if he was silently trying to read Jack's mind. After a few long moments, he nodded. "Fine, good day, Mr. Williams."

Jack waited until the professor left before quickly gathering his things and racing after Heidi. He hoped to hell she went home.

It didn't take him long to get to Lander Hall, where Heidi roomed. He followed a group of coeds inside and bypassed the elevator, taking the stairs two at a time until he got to the third floor. He headed down the hall, scanning door numbers until he came to Heidi's dorm room, which bordered the floor's common area. Things were pretty docile on the floor, and so a lot of the room doors were open, with students milling about doing one thing or another.

"Hey, there," a cute brunette said with a wink, as she and another girl walked past. Jack acknowledged them with a nod, but kept his focus. He stepped in front of Heidi's open door and knocked on the jamb. A stocky brunette looked up from her spot at a desk. She was obviously studying. She didn't appear to be much taller than Heidi, but she had a larger frame. Her pretty face turned to a frown.

"Who are you?"

"Are you Rose?"

"Yeah." She stood up and came towards Jack.

"I'm Jack Williams, a ... a friend of Heidi's."

Her eyes went wide and a little blush colored her cheeks. "Oh! You're Mr. Williams."

Jack had hoped to keep his real relationship with Heidi quiet, given the oddity of an instructor visiting a student's dorm room, but Rose's reaction squashed that hope.

"Um, yeah."

Her smile made her already pretty face shine. "Nice to finally meet you, considering I feel like I already KNOW you."

Jack smiled; he could read between the lines. He should have known Heidi wouldn't be quiet about her interest in him, given her vivaciousness. "Nice to meet you, too. I, um, I was actually looking for Heidi. You haven't seen her recently, have you?"

Rose's smile turned to a frown. "Didn't she come to your class?"

"Yes, but she got out of the room before I could talk to her. There was something important we needed to discuss."

She sighed and went back to sit in her chair. "I haven't seen her since she left to go to your class. My guess is she's with her boyfriend."

"Any idea where that would be?"

She shrugged. "Not really. She doesn't really talk much about where they spend their time, but my guess is it's probably not somewhere on campus."

"Why do you say that?"

She gave Jack a level look. "Did you see her face? I'm not sure whatever happened to cause that would go over well at one of our fine public establishments." She rolled her eyes. "And since Mike doesn't live on campus..."

"Gotcha. Do you know where he lives?"

"Funny, you are the second person to ask me that question in the last couple of days." She shook her head. "Sorry, I can't help you."

Jack sighed.

"You can just wait until she comes back." She scanned Jack up and down, raising her eyebrow appraisingly, before smiling at him. "Or I can tell her you stopped by and have her call you."

"I can't. I really need to find her now."

"What's so important that it can't wait?"

Jack mimicked her earlier level gaze. "Did you see her face?" He left the rest unsaid.

Rose's eyes opened wide and her expression sobered. "Uh, about the only place she ever mentioned going with Mike was to Nero's. It's a bar a couple of blocks from campus."

"I've seen it. I'll check there. And if she gets back, will you try to hold her here and call me?"

"I assume you're trying to help her."

Jack nodded, and Rose picked up her pen.

"Sure," she said, "Give me your number."

As Jack walked out of the building, he wondered what he was getting himself into. What would he do when he found her? It would depend on what he faced when that happened. Still, he felt Abigail's and Allison's support for his cause, and that steeled his resolve. He flipped his cell phone open and dialed Abigail's number. As it rang, he knew he'd feel much better if he had some physical support, too. Seth was supposed to be at their apartment for dinner and to catch a movie with Jack, so Jack knew his friend would be available.

"Hey, Lover," Abigail said, as soon as she picked up.

"Hey, Baby. I'm gonna be late for dinner. Heidi showed up to class with a nasty bruise on her face, but she got out before I could catch her. I'm trying to find her now."

"Oh, Jack, I'm sorry. Are you going to call the police?"

"And what would I tell them? For all I know she's grocery shopping right now. I need to find her first, then I'll decide what to do."

Abigail was quiet for a second. "OK. Please be careful, Jack. Don't do anything too stupid. You've got two girls who prefer you to come home at some point tonight."

"Thanks, Abbie. I need to get off here so I can call Seth."

"No need. He's here right now. Let me get him."

Jack smirked at the thought that Seth arrived early. Seth's presence at their apartment had become regular enough that it wasn't strange that he'd come just to hang out. That he came early when Jack wasn't there just meant he wanted some extra time for harmless flirting.

Seth's happy voice came over the line. "Hey, Teach, it's not what you think. I've only been able to get her topless. I swear, her pants are held up with a chastity belt."

Jack ignored the tease. "I need you to get back to campus ASAP."

Seth's voice became serious. "What's up?"

"I need your help to deal with a situation. Bring the same attitude you had when you tried to kick my ass on the basketball court that day."

"I'm there, Man."

"I'll call you in a bit and give you the exact location."

Jack hung up and crossed the street. It took a minute to remember which block Nero's was on, but in short order he entered the dive. The smell of stale cigarette smoke and booze almost made him gag. A thousand painful memories from his teenage years flooded his mind, but he quickly pushed through them as his eyes adjusted to dim interior. Only a handful of patrons sat at the bar or at the small tables scattered around. Two frat boys were playing pool. Nobody gave Jack much attention. He went to the bar and sat down and quickly the bartender was there.

"What can I get you?"

"I'm looking for a couple of friends of mine, would have been here sometime in the last hour or so. I wonder if you might have noticed them. A petite little blonde dressed in a tight turtleneck and a denim miniskirt, sporting a healthy shiner. The guy is about my height, average build, short brown hair and carries himself like a pompous arrogant prick. His name's Mike."

The bartender frowned. "Friends, huh?"

"Have you seen them?"

The bartender smirked and started wiping down the bar.

"Listen, Man, this is serious," Jack said.

"It always is. You gonna buy something?"

Jack set his jaw. "I know she's been here before with this guy, and I know she usually leaves here pretty plastered. You do realize that she's underage, don't you?"

The bartender planted both hands on the edge of the bar and leaned towards Jack.

"Thanks for stopping by."

Jack figured the guy would be closed lipped. Unfortunately, Jack's wallet was empty and he was pretty sure that the few coins in his pocket wouldn't do much to entice the man. In frustration, he turned to leave. He passed by a lady wiping down tables as he weaved his way through them towards the exit.
