Iguana Don: Profile

Consider the lowly iguana. He mostly just sits around looking fat and ugly. He is content to eat when he is hungry, seek comfortable temperatures when necessary, have sex when the opportunity presents. The rest of the time he just breathes - content in that state of non-being that is (ironically) so desperately sought by students of the Eastern meditative arts

It is not a bad way to live, actually. What appears to outsiders to be a very boring existence, is actually - from the iguana's persepective - interesting and pleasant. Think about it: how would you feel about life if most of your conscious hours were spent enjoying food, sex, and physical comfort?

He is not a predator, and in fact if left alone, he does not bother anyone. Even when others invade his personal space, if they are not offering sex or competition he tends to try to ignore them. If he feels threatened, he might try to bluff his opponent, but given the opportunity, he will most likely avoid a confrontation. If cornered, though, he has teeth, and claws, and a tail that can deliver a painful blow!

The fossil record indicates that Iguandon probably shared many attributes with our friend, the iguana, modified by the differences in size, mobility, and perhaps herd behaviors. He had to move around more, because a body that big required a lot more food (and generated a lot more waste!). He also had a couple of nasty thumb-spikes in his defense arsenal.

Like Iguandon I am old - I have even been called a fossil! Like my animal totems, I don't do much that would excite any of the Type "A" personalities out there. I am not a predator: I am content to enjoy the pleasures that life offers up voluntarily. I do not stress myself by striving to get more, or to get it faster, or to expand my influence, while forgetting why that seemed desirable in the first place...

It is usually warm in this place where I and my totems live. There is nearly always a gentle breeze, and you can easily spend hours watching the small boats playing tag out on the water. The nearest and tallest trees are palms, dwarfed only by a few edifices built mostly for the touristas.

Life is good here, for most of us: there is only minimal need for clothing and shelter; food, ron and cerveza are plentiful and cheap; and the women, whether twelve years old or twelve decades, are all beautiful. Those who need more, well, they work in the hotels and bars, catering to the touristas.

I am even luckier than most who live here. As the only child of a local patrón, I was afforded the luxury of a Yanqui education, culminating in my MBA. I think my father felt that this would allow me to magically turn the family business into a multinational enterprise. If so, he died in disappointment. I did, however manage to parley my new knowledge into a better marketing program for the cottages that we rent to tourista families. They will never generate the kind of revenue that the hotels rake in, but I am quite comfortable.

So I am Don, and these are my stories. Some of these things might have actually happened, to somebody, but you should assume that I made it all up for my own entertainment. Do not get too caught up in the fantasy. Also, keep in mind that my culture may be different from yours, and we may hold different convictions about what behaviors are acceptable or desirable. If you can get past that, you might enjoy my work.

My stories will mostly feature myself as a protagonist. That is because I find it much easier to spin a tale in the first person. The characters in my stories will be based upon people I know or have met. That is because it is easier to write about characters whose idiosyncrasies are familiar. If that makes the stories believable for you, so much the better. If it makes them true, for you, you should seek counseling.

While the stories build upon things that I have experienced, as well as things experienced by people whom I know, they are not biographical. You should assume that they represent life as it might have been, rather than how it actually was.

All that said, if you cannot legally possess or read my work, because of your age or where you live, or for any other reason, then do not download or read it. Likewise, if the content offends you, or if reading it makes you want to do things that are not allowed, wherever you live, then refrain. I am not your Papá. Take responsibility for your own life.
