Dogs

What tales do you remember having dogs as protective companions?

*****

My south neighbor has two guard dogs inside his chain link fence. They do not bark often but when they do there is something to bark about.

Last night, shortly after midnight, the dogs started barking close to my house.

I looked at the security cameras and saw a man shaped shadow standing near a tree in the moon light.

I yelled out the open window "You're on camera" and he ran away.

*****

Soโ€ฆ tales of dogs that are loyal and protective.

I remember several tales by different authors set in the old west or just post-civil war times that had dogs as a adjunct to the main tale.

What's your favorite ones?

There are a few sounds that will trigger my anger and a dog's bark is one of them, so I don't really care for dogs.

That being said you should check out

Not so much for me personally, but for the community.

I love to see suggestions that I have not read.

That means my search terms were too broad or to narrow.

Other folks might enjoy reading a tale with 'good dogs' the same as I do.

Cheers!

wordytom had a second one - https://storiesonline.net/s/62814/depression-soup - where a dog entered the story about half way through and took a starring role.
I never met wordytom's parents but his descriptions of his father and the dog are a lot ott.

If you want stories with a load of dogs behaving realistically - but not necessarily protectively - Wes Boyd had a few, https://storiesonline.net/s/53936/busted-axle-road [link corrected] and then https://storiesonline.net/s/56019/runners-moon for example. He wrote several - most of which never made it to SOL or Finestories - but these are the big two.

terriblethom wrote a story - https://storiesonline.net/s/70406/the-protector-repost - where well-trained, homicidal guard-canines played a role. Let's say their behaviour was not particularly realistic. Having been attacked by a dog four months back (the owner held a second one back and then managed to regain control over the first one after it had sunk its teeth into my hand), I'm not feeling particularly tolerant of vicious dogs at present.

Oh... This is exactly what I was thinking about when the I wrote the initial post.

Wes Boyd is an author that I generally do not read. No clue why, just does not 'click' across the wide spectrum of his tales. Some really appeal, most do not. Sigh...

But I'll expand my horizons. Thank you!

Cheers!

Wes Boyd - read Busted Axle Road before Runner's Moon, it gives backstory to the dog situation; also, Rocinante on his site gives backstory to that, but there's not a lot of dog in the story. Still in Spearfish Lake, not on this site, Bird in the Hand is another with a dog as an important character; I don't remember dogs as being important in Dawnwalker.

A bit of a cheat, but Refufenik's Human Phoenix includes a dog as a major character.

Finally (for now), FantasyLover's The Goatherd has the MC develop, train and rely on a small pack of dogs.

Can't think of any more ATM (at least, not by name).

I had meant to link to Busted Axle Road but accidentally pointed to the entire series instead, link now corrected - thanks.

Dead tree author Dean Koontz, had several strong dog MC
This is one my favorite authors and story.

Watchers is about Travis (ex-soldier), Nora (damsel), Vince Nasco (hitman) and Einstein (the dog). Koontz takes us through several different perspectives and gradually (read: very slowly) uncovers the story about what is going on at Banodyne Labs.
