New message function

REP ๐Ÿšซ
Updated:

I vaguely recall there was a new message function, but probably confusing that with my regular email.

It would be nice to be able to create an email to multiple addressees and to send emails with attachments. I don't recall if this functionality has been previously addressed.

The site's messaging system is not a full blown mail system. It was never designed to function as more than that. The plain text amount of messages is a big burden on the site's disk space, if I allow attachments, then the site would need so much more, as attachments are rarely small compared to the 1 to 2k required per message now.

I may add a contact book function at some point where you would keep links to those who contacted you previously.

Thanks and I understand you storage difficulties.

REP, your best bet is to continue to rely on email, not SOL's messaging system. You can set up SOL so it forwards all your messages to email, and if you've ever communicated with a reader before, you can reply via email and it'll reach them (don't ask me how it does it, though).

Also, I encourage readers to contact me via email, since I still don't fully trust the messaging system (the messages all get deleted eventually, while I keep all of my reader and editor comments).

You'll also notice that SOL still provides readers with author's private email accounts, though most have probably forgotten it's available.

How and where?

How and where?

Under the old email system prior to the messaging system, if the person sending the email didn't use the anonymous options and you hit 'reply to' their direct email address was in the reply window, and you could contact them direct with the reply. That all stopped when the new messaging system came into being.

My question was about the 'Still provides' part. The new system allows anonymous communication with readers without revealing anybody's email address to anybody.

I saw that as referring to the service you have were you can get a Sol email address, but I could be reading it wrong.

The first half of his post does refer back to the need to have an address from an older message.

How?? I check Mail and My Account. Unable to locate anything supporting that capability.

You can find it by clicking on "Messaging & Notifications"

Thanks I found it. I was thinking that was story feedback messages.

From what I can see you have the option of either allowing your email address to be shown or have it excised.
I take the view that if I am going to contact someone I take responsibility for the message.

I don't like the idea of hidden sources - they allow abuse and worse just like the scam stuff I get from a host of US sources. As an example "8001 Castor Avenue # 379, Philadelphia, PA 19152" was today responsible for an offer of a free iPhone" if I give a mailing address, there is one prolific New York address but most of them hide behind strange addresses and Panama cutouts..
