freezing firefox

tpowers ๐Ÿšซ

I download selected stories and read them at my leisure. Of my browsers, only Firefox allows me to do this easily. It saves each story page as a text file with no extraneous characters within the text.

But now there's a problem. I can get in, and download a page, but that's all. Once that page is downloaded, Firefox completely freezes. I can't go to a previous page. I can't go to login. I can't switch from updates to new stories. I can't even get out of it, except by way of the task manager. One page downloaded, then freeze.

I don't have this problem with any other site. Both my computers have the same problem. The problem first hit about 10 days ago. Nothing I try is yet able to fix it.

BTW, Windows 10.

You must wait for an update to firefox. There is nothing to be done on our end. The site uses very strict standard-compliant method of downloading and for some reason the latest version of firefox is hanging.

I don't know what to fix even if I tried.

My Firefox is 56.0.2 64 bit version running on Windows 10.

I am getting hanging which I blame on Mozilla Firefox BUT

everything I do with SOL is on Internet Explorer version 11.674.15063.0 update 11.07.47 (but I don't use IE for anything else). I get hanging starting on Firefox and after a time it spreads to IE. I use Firefox for mail, weather, and a few other (child friendly) sites. However, if I don't have Firefox loaded then no problem with SOL on IE even after 48 hours.

(I occasionally read SOL on Apple's Safari with no problem)

I am running the same version of Firefox on Win 7 64bit.

I don't have any of the issues you describe.

I would suggest that the issues you are having are tied to either issues with your internet connection or malware.

Internet connection is reasonably good (fibreoptic followed by TPLink). Malware - I suspected that but my hard disk has been checked exactly for that.

I used to use W7 (on a different laptop running the same software, virus checkers etc.) and had no problem

I've been getting popup adds purporting to be a critical Firefox update, but the links aren't to Mozilla's site. It's relatively new, so anti-virus and other malware checkers might not have it in the systems yet.

That would suggest it's a Win10 problem.

Big warning about that in the UK press a few days ago. Apparently the popups appeared on a specific named site. Comment was that it was a new virus strain

I switched to 32 bit firefox and it only hangs for about 5 seconds. You can download it here.

This is the direct link.

After firefox 57 brought my machine to a crawl I finally switched to Pale Moon to fix both problems.

After many problems with hanging I now have Firefox Quantum 57.0 (64 bit). I can't check the claim that it uses far fewer resources but it is (so far) very much better.
One of my hates (the lack of default bars) is gone and the "menu" is far more comprehensive. The reload button (was an arrow to the right of the address) has moved and took a little finding but you can click the address and then Enter. Otherwise no apparent problems in switching

New Firefox works fine for me to now. Thanks to all.
