Bookappy

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

When I download a story from SOL, it appears in text or rtf or rtfd on my desktop, where, if I want to, I can save it and read it later.
When I look at bookappy, those options do not appear to be available to me. Admittedly I am a technological neanderthal, but the apparent lack of my favorite options keeps me from buying stories from bookappy.

Option 1

Click "Add to cart" go to cart, buy the book.

Option 2

Return your computer to the store, go to a bookshop, buy a book.

Does either of your two recommended options give me the txt, rtf or rtfd on my desktop?

After buying go to your bookshelf. Select "Read" from the book you bought. This presents a html page with the book.
Press Ctrl+A (select all) then Ctrl+C (copy).
Open your favorite text editor and pres Ctrl+V (paste).
Voila, your book in txt. Don't forget to save the book in your text editor.

Wouldn't the loss of formatting make it unreadable?

@Switch Blayde

I have no idea what formatting it might have lost, but it kept paragraphs.

My ebooks on Bookapy are formatted with indenting paragraphs, not providing a blank line between them. So when I post it on SOL, I have to insert the blank line (SOL drops the indenting automatically).

But if you copy that ebook from Bookapy and paste it into a txt file (that doesn't support indenting), won't the whole novel show up as one big paragraph? What mechanism replaces the indentation with blank lines? Maybe the ebooks you copied from Bookapy were formatted with blank lines like they are on SOL.

That's the main formatting I was referring to. You'd lose italics as well.

The way I described works perfectly fine as you found out and doesn't need an extra external program. Still, a small piece of advise: always download the epub you bought too. You paid for it and programs like Calibre can export it to many different formats, among which is txt. You might want to use a different format in the future and starting from a txt is not always the best starting point.

@Keet

yes, the way you described works fine. What does not work fine is downloading it in epub format. The icon for the file appears on my desktop, but when I place it on top of the kindle reader icon, nothing happens. When I place it on top of the Caliber icon it says the file is damaged an asks if I want Caliber to repair the file. When I answer "yes," it tells me the file cannot be repaired.
This is probably me doing something wrong, but I have no idea what that something might be.
I'm using a Mac.

Yeah, because:

1. The kindle reader doesn't read epubs. You need an epub reader for that.

2. You can't add files to the Kindle for PC app that way.

You can go to the Kindle section of Amazon and learn how to email most book formats and text files to Kindle, which will automatically convert to the internal Kindle format.

I was aware of this.

That doesn't (or it wasn't for a while) work with the Kindle for PC app. I contacted Amazon Kindle support about it and was told that they didn't support sending personal documents to Kindle for PC.

It may or may not have changed, I haven't re-tested it in a while.

My understanding is that the available formats are determined by the author.

Many though not all are available in PDF. If you don't have a standalone PDF reader, most web browsers can handle PDF files.

Both Kindle and Epub readers are available for Desktop computers for free.

Why would you insist on plain text or RTF format from bookappy?

One possibility would be the ease that .txt format allows the removal of copyright notices etc, perhaps a few replace all to change character names, before uploading for sale elsewhere.

before uploading for sale elsewhere.

Every format is easy to hack, even the most locked down ones. A determined pirate will find the way and the tools to do so.

Bookapy sells ebooks, in ebook formats. The main format available is EPUB and it's the default file format for book delivery.

Since we provide a read-online option, the file can be saved as html or copied as text.

How do I save it as html? I don't see anything on Bookappy that indicates that. Keet provided the way to save it as text, and it's not obvious to me what to do to save it as html.

While viewing the book in your browser after you click 'Read', from the file menu select 'Save'.
