The ability to "Like" comments on stories

Marc Nobbs 🚫

I've been away from SOL for quite a while and coming back to post a few stories recently, I have to say I really like that readers can comment on stories. It's giving me an insight into what they are thinking/feeling as a story progresses - which is great.

I'm unsure about replying to the comments directly, as I would a DM - it just feels "different" to me to reply publicly.

But I do want the people commenting to know I've read the comments and appreciate them. I think a simple "like" button would do that. Or, a step further, an 'up vote/down vote" button (but I appreciate that's much more work).

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Better to leave well enough alone IMO.

I see some authors responding to comments, or maybe engaging with commenters is a better description, and sometimes it seems to work, though I'm not sure I can identify what makes for engagement I like vs. what comes off as a bit out of place. I do think authors should feel free to delete personal attacks devoid of any engagement with the story. Likewise, I don't enjoy it when an author decides to defend a story or correct a reader's understanding or interpretation. Best to leave such corrections to other readers, if they care enough to offer it.
