Sponsian: Emperor of Transylvania

JoeBobMack ๐Ÿšซ

I just ran across a news story about a new determination that "Roman" coins long thought to have been fake are likely authentic, but produced by a "Emperor" (maybe) who was a military commander of a Roman post in what is now Transylvania in the 200s C.E. Discovered in 1713, the coins were deemed fake by the leading authority of that time, but recent re-analysis, both historical and physical, suggests they were made and circulated in this remote but still functioning part of the Roman empire.

There's just something about this that grabs me. I feel like there's a story in there, but likely not one I could write. Anyway, thought I would throw it out there. Anyone ever get ideas from things like this?

Here's the story I read: Roman Coins Once Thought to Be Fake Reveal a Long Lost Historical Figure

No way to know from the slim facts whether there is or was anything interesting about the almost-forgotten Sponsion, who may or may not have been an emperor.

Perhaps his "rein" was similar to that of Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico.

(A man who deserves more respect than any present-day leader, BTW)

But "The Emperor of Transylvania" sure makes a nifty title!

Sounds like an alt-history where Vlad the Impaler beat the Turks and expanded his principality by going on to conquer his neighbors.

Why not "The Emperor of Pennsylvania"?

Which may very well be the case. It is not unusual for pretenders to a throne to do such things to try and give themselves more legitimacy. Just because somebody gives themselves a title, does not mean it was true in anything other than their own imagination.

Emperor Norton was known to have issued his own currency as well, which some merchants in San Francisco would even honor.

Years ago when I worked in Baghdad by the Bay, it was not unusual to meet "Emperor Norton" giving a tour of the city. Not the real one of course, but a gentleman that dresses and talks like him, who gives walking tours all over the city. I worked next to or across the street from two city landmarks, Fort Gunnybags and the Transamerica Tower.

Yea i can see how something like that would grab anyone's imagination. Personally i think this sounds like a more solid idea than others i've read on here to start a story.

The trouble is without a good direction there are infinite possibilities.
