Lost Story - Shipwerck Royal Navy

grandad_rufus 🚫
Updated:

So I have just finished Sole Survivor by Dyspneic, and it reminded me of a story I read years ago ...

Set in 17th (or possibly 18th century) Royal Navy warship is wrecked in a storm - Survivor comes to on a beach (of course) and eventually meets a French Captain. Marries native woman. Uses cannon mounted on the wreck to sink Pirate ship. Can't remember if he returned to England or remains on the island.

Help me Obiwan !

Only Royal Navy story that I can remember is the Anthony Carter story by Argon (I think it was a series)

I know those stories and it is definitely not one of them.

That reminds me of one of Louis L'Amour's Sackett books probably Sackett's Land, but it's decades since I read it and my brain may mix it with another book.

I just started it and noticed something strange, right off he remembers he was the first mate on a ship and starts to describe his memories of what happened, and he never refers to himself in the first person but always as the first mate. "The first mate did this or the first mate did that."

Am I wrong to think that's strange?

I put it down to the authour's writing style

Perhaps, but that doesn't make it less strange.

Isn't talking about oneself in third person a psychiatric condition?

The US Marines do that during boot camp so, maybe.

All Marines are brain damaged. For proof I male one point.

They all VOLUNTEERED to join the Marines.

J/K guys. We love you anyway, brain damaged or not.

My boss is a former Marine so I harass him about that all the time.

former Marine

'earning the title "Marine" has value that lasts a lifetime. From our first day serving, we have experienced life differently than most, as the trust our Nation places in usβ€”lives in us. We live each day committed to a common cause that fulfills a collective sense of purpose and belonging that is shared by all who have earned the right to fight in this uniform. Imbued by a calling many have heard, but ingrained with a fighting spirit few possess, we are Marines. And with those we fight with by our side, we lead our Nation forwardβ€”while defending the ideals promised long ago to all who call themselves Americans. We are able to enjoy the way of life we defend, as well as the pride that comes by doing it, as United States Marines."

Sounds brain damaged to me.

Those of us in EMS are too, even if we're not Marines.

@akarge

All Marines are brain damaged.

Take Asimov's three laws of robotics:

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

If you substitute 'US Marine' for 'robot', US Marines would routinely violate all three laws. So a US Marine is a robot with brain damage ;-)

Isn't talking about oneself in third person a psychiatric condition?

Not directly, but it is a possible symptom of dissociative identity disorder.

However, it is worth noting that some psychologists think that talking about oneself in the third person can be a useful tactic to for people dealing with self-esteem issues, difficulty performing under stress, and when learning to manage emotions.

Basically, the person is encouraged to imagine a version of themselves who is more capable at what they are trying to achieve than they are and to use that ideal as a stand-in for themselves. By doing this over and over they take on the desired personality traits.

And then there is always the Royal We (Not to be confused with the Royal we-we)
