Robert Jenkins, 3-parter by rougher63

PotomacBob 🚫

Just came across the 3-part "A Robert Jenkins story" and notice all 3 parts have scores between 7.5 and 8, and, as far as I can tell, has no reviews. A total of 49 chapters,if my math is correct.
Has anybody read it all? Opinions?

Has anybody read it all?

I think I read it years ago, but when I went to the end of the last chapter of book one, I didn't record a score for it. I pretty much score everything I totally finish (and a few things I couldn't finish that sucked.) I started the first chapter and none of it rang a bell with me.

Don't we all? After all, stories, like characters, are better with their flaws exposed, rather than hidden away. Our flaws make our stories richer, and our story-telling quirks make the stories notably 'ours'.

One of the flaws was a name, there was a Russian male doctor called "Kournikova" (or similar) in there. The "ova" at the end means "daughter of", a male's name would end in "ov".

I just started reading it after seeing this thread and it is coming across as very "clinical" in writing style. Is the whole thing like this?

I rated Books 1 and 2 as "Great" which is a 9. I scored Book 3 as "Very Good" which is an 8. Definitely worth reading. The author is dead, he has one other story, very short, not in the series which I can't remember reading. You could do a lot worse than reading his stories.

I looked again at the other story by the author, and it too is worth reading.

*Synopsis: A story for Valentine's day. An older story I did some time ago. It is sickly sweet and has no sex. Very short story about an average guy, a letter carrier, and a woman on his route. No descriptive sex.

Yes, it is. Not sure if that's the term I would use to describe it, but I know exactly what you mean.

I think he also wrote as Howie Randolph; and possibly Howard Randolph.

Agreed - I saw the second variation, obviously a long time ago now so I don't remember when or where.

There is a "Chuck and the Young War Widow" which is still on AssTr (Kristen's Collection 28) and was from him, copyright 2004. It is a txt file.

"Chuck and the Young War Widow"

I read it. It is a downer, the hero and his girl break-up at the end. In my opinion, it isn't as good as any of his stories here.

Lol true but the only other word that came to mind at the time was "sterile" :') "Unemotional" came later after I made the post.

I'm still enjoying the story though! :)

If this is the doc you speak of it appears he is a she...

Dr. Angell has referred me to a Dr. Kournikova, Russian trained physician at Presbyterian, who is an exercise and rehabilitation physiologist. She did her residency fellowship at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco. I'm going to see her this afternoon.

and

Dr. Kournikova wasn't much on personality, but Dr. Angell said she knew her stuff in rehabilitation medicine.

I just keep thinking of a young Anna when I hear "kournikova" lol!

Aha - he changed it at some point, the good Dr Kournikova was originally male.
The original version I have is from July 2006 and was entitled "Bobby Jenkins".

No, it is the female form of a family name. You're thinking of a female patronymic. If it was an "ochestva", it would be Kournikeva. I married an "Anna Geogeievna Ivanovna."

That is not what a Bulgarian friend - who has since returned there - told me.

I have known my wife Anya for 31 years and have been married to her for just over 30. She was born in Tashkent, UzSSR to ethnic Russian parents. Her family now lives in Sacramento, CA. Metro-Sac has 70,000 Russian speakers living there. I tell folks when I go through the front gate, there is an invisible sign "You are leaving the American Zone of Occupation".

I just finished part 1. Yeah, a truly "emotionless" story. No emotions in the writing nor did any character seem to show any. Don't know any other way to describe it, though I thought the storyline was good.

Oh well,,,let's see how part 2 goes! Lol
