Converting To Kindle Format

NC-Retired ๐Ÿšซ

A quick Google suggests there are lots of websites that offer 'free' conversion of a Word doc to Kindle format.

Do you use them? Can they be trusted to not steal the work or embed malicious code?

What's your experience and recommendation?

TIA

If you're just talking .mobi conversion I thought at least one of the 'book' tools did that. Sorry it's late/early and brain not working anymore than that.

The simplest is to simply go through Amazon. When you register a kindle device you get an email address to use to send docs to your kindle devices. When emailing a document, you can request conversion to Kindle format.

It's called sendtoKindle It also permanently adds the file to your kindle account. but you can manually remove it too.

If you just want to copy the file to your kindle locally, convert to .mobi and interact with it like USB drive

It's called sendtoKindle

Another bonus with sendtoKindle, Is that if you have multiple Kindle devices, it will send to all of them in one go.

It's .azw3 now.

It's been .azwX for over a decade. AZW is an extension of .mobi (The big extension in the first version of azw was adding DRM)

epub works fine now.

Calibre will do the conversion. And it's done on your computer so no one can steal it. You can use Calibre to convert from Word docx to many formats, like ePub or Kindle.

But why do you want to do it in the first place? When I publish on Amazon KDP, I upload an ePub. Amazon converts it to whatever format it's using at the time for Kindle.

Calibre

That's the name of the app I was trying to remember. It's a little clunky but has likely improved since I last looked at it, maybe 5 years ago

I suspect NC want's to read 'local' files on their Kindle

Why? Because a friend wrote a long tale and he asks for my opinion.

It will take many hours to get through the tale.

My most comfortable digital reading device is my Kindle Paper White.

Got it. I was thinking from the publishing side.

But Calibre will work for that too. It converts from docx to almost anything, including azw3 which is what your Kindle reader probably uses. If the reader is old and uses mobi, Calibre converts to that format as well.

@Switch Blayde

Calibre comes with a simple ebook-convert utility, if you don't want to bring up the full application.

ebook-convert title.epub title.azw3
