Metadata on story page

At the top of each new chapter's page, there's metadata, stuff like author name and story title. Also included is the current chapter name and numbers in brackets. I thought those numbers were the chapter you were on and the total number of chapters.

But in the story I'm reading, the metadata is:

Chapter 4 [6/22]

Why isn't it [4/22]? What does the [6/22] mean?

It means the chapter you are reading is the sixth part - four chapters and two something-others. Those something others probably show up as headings on the story home page, or perhaps as a foreword or prologue.

ETA The latest chapter in Death to Power by The Smart One is Chapter 44. And it shows in the metadata as 44/44. But the URL shows 46. The story page shows heading Volume 1 and Volume 2. So your story has extra 'chapters' not labelled as chapters (a cast list and prologue, perhaps?).

@awnlee jawking

(a cast list and prologue, perhaps?).

Yeah, I remember not reading a cast list.
Thanks.

@Switch Blayde

They're usually things like Forewords, Summaries or Prequels, which are not numbered chapters. They're also typically used by very select authors, thus not affecting the vast majority of authors/readers.
