A few minutes into class, I got a note saying to go to the office. I walked quickly, in case Trevino was still around somewhere. When I got to the main office, the receptionist directed me to Mrs. Joseph's office.

She was waiting for me.

"I understand you were involved in an altercation in the bathroom?"

"I didn't start it."

"Then who did?"

I explained what had happened.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"Huh?"

"You should have immediately reported it to me or another teacher."

"Oh, I don't know. I just wanted to get away."

Her face softened. "That's understandable. Now, on Monday you had another dispute. He came into my office and I had to explain to him that penetration is not considered reasonable. Have there been any other incidents?"

"There was one in the cafeteria yesterday. The people I was with at the time mentioned he had something of a reputation. That's why I asked Anthony to go into the bathroom with me."

"Did they mention anything specific?"

"Something happened with some girl named Alvarado something, but it was never proven."

"Hmmm..." she typed something into her computer, "Molly Alvarado."

"That sounds right."

"It says she transferred to another school last year. I can't find any accusations, though."

"It wouldn't have happened at school. I think they said it was at a party."

"Still, an incident of that nature would normally be reported to the school. Why don't you sit tight while I go ask around?"

She left and returned a few minutes later, followed by Vice-Principal McGuire, an older man with a Southern drawl and a mustache. She had me recount what I'd heard.

"Oh, yes," he said, "I remember that. The girl made some sort of wild accusation about a party they both attended. We decided it wasn't credible, so we removed it from both of their files."

Mrs. Joseph frowned. "That's not standard procedure. Do you know why the girl transferred schools?"

"Jason is a key member of our football team's defensive line. I imagine that she found a somewhat frosty reception after pulling her little stunt."

"I see, well given recent events I think we might need to revisit that situation."

"What recent events?"

Mrs. Joseph had me recount my entire experience with Trevino.

Mr. McGuire frowned. "It sounds to me like what we have here is a miscommunication that ended with Mr. Miller breaking the school rules against fighting. What is called for is a simple 10 day suspension."
