We all climbed out and unloaded the travois kits, which Etala, Keela and Shahana promptly assembled. The items we were taking with us, having already been organized, were quickly reloaded and secured to the travois. Takim took this same time to search out a location to hide the vehicles while I locked up everything that was not going with us in the trailer. Our preparations took about an hour and Andrea said we should still arrive in time to set up camp before sunset without rushing.

There were seven travois and sixteen of us capable of pulling them so I assigned two people to each, one native and one new arrival, matching each pair as close as I could. We didn’t need all of the travois but I figured we may as well use them to spread things out so none of us had too heavy a load. The Adams girls were surprised when I assigned them to pulling a travois but not Takim, Keela, and Karen.

“How come we have to pull and they don’t?” whined Abby. “They’re bigger and stronger than we are.”

“Yeah, and they’ve probably done it before too.” grumbled Gayle. “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do with it.”

“Why can’t we just take the trucks instead of hauling these things? They don’t even have wheels!” added Abby.

“Girls!” yelled Sheila. “I’m sure Andy has his reasons for all this. I’m not sure what they could be but I’m sure they are good reasons. You have to realize that we’re not back home anymore and we probably will never get back there. Andy and his friends have saved us more than once already and I trust him to keep watching out for us. We all have to work together, right Andy?”

“That’s right, Sheila. The chance of returning to our old home-world is zero. We have to work together if we are to have a future here. Sure, I have equipment and tools that are like you are used to, but the natives of this world don’t. If we were to ride in in the trucks, we would most likely cause a panic or be attacked as some kind of monster. There is nothing more dangerous than someone who thinks you are a threat to them. Can you understand that?” The girls nodded so I continued.

“The travois are easy to use once you get the hang of it. You have to find the balance point between ease and efficiency. That’s why I paired you up like I did, so your partner can help you learn. Ours are actually easier to haul than the ones the natives use because the person who designed them made it so two or more can pull one together. Another thing he did was to put a kind of runner at the ground end that helps it slide over the terrain easier.”

I saw Abby was getting ready to complain again but I didn’t give her the chance.

“As for why Takim, Keela, and Karen are not working a travois, I have assigned them the task of making sure we stay safe. Takim and Keela have the most knowledge about the terrain, wildlife, and people in the area. Karen has advanced survival training. All of them are excellent scouts and can use the native weapons to defend not only themselves, but the rest of us as well. Now, if you can prove to me that you can do a better job than they can I will be more than happy to let you trade places.”

“But you have guns and stuff. I saw them in the truck. Why worry about rocks and spears?”

“Because I don’t want to have to worry about someone trying to take them and hurting one of you while trying to make me to give them up. These weapons are beyond what we had before. They have sensors that will not let anyone who is not an authorized user to use it as anything other than a club. The others don’t know that. If they see me use one they will want it for their own and attack to try to get it, and if they do manage to get one and find it doesn’t work for them, they will either think I am a god or shaman to be feared, or become angry and attack. If I show them it won’t work for them, the same thing could happen. I don’t want them to be afraid of me for no reason. And I really don’t want them to start worshiping me.”

“Okay, I get it, I think. It’s kinda like the Interstellar Union’s First Edict. You know, about not interfering with developing races, right?” said Gayle.

“Ugh.” Abby groaned at her sister. “You and that stupid Star Quest show.”

I smiled. Star Quest had been one of my favorite TV shows since it first aired. I even stayed loyal after the new, modernized versions had come out. “Happiness and Long Life.” I said as I performed the appropriate gesture.

Gayle’s eyes went wide. “You’re a... !” she exclaimed before gathering her composure and performing the response gesture. “Joy and Eternal Peace”, she said with a smile. “I thought I would never hear that again!”

Abby shook her head and frowned at me. “Not you too! I thought I had finally heard the last of that show.”

“Not likely.” Karen said as she walked up. “A copy of every recording and book is in the library, including TV shows. At least we won’t have to hear about any new episodes.”

“Don’t worry, Abby. Nobody is going to force you to watch any entertainment type shows you don’t want to. We might talk about them, but we won’t force them on you. Besides, there are plenty of educational materials and you will have to use those. Now, it looks like everyone else is ready to go, so why don’t you go find your partners and we’ll get this show on the road. Just don’t forget where we parked.”

We arrived at the gathering place with little time to get settled in. I’m not sure what I had expected when we cleared the woods, but it sure wasn’t what was there. Keela and I stopped to take a look around while Karen and Takim kept the others moving.

I had assumed that the area would be overgrown with maybe some evidence of previous gatherings. Instead, the area resembled an ancient amphitheater about one-hundred feet deep. There were grassy terraces about twenty feet wide and ten feet tall with stone steps jutting out of the walls. Each terrace was clear except for the grass, a few trees, and fire pits that would have been the envy of anyone’s backyard. The largest fire pit was located on the lowest level and measured at least twenty feet across while smaller ones were evenly spaced around each level. It struck me that the entire ‘pit’ was an almost perfect circle.

To my right were paths leading off into the woods, but most of them were blocked by poles. Beyond the amphitheater the ground was clear to the forest about two-hundred yards away.

Clear except for the other natives and their animals that is.

I wanted to go meet them and see what kinds of animals they had but Keela stopped me. “We must get our camp set before the sun goes. The traders will be here when the sun returns.”

I looked sadly across the ‘pit’ to our neighbors. They seemed to be herding the animals away.

“Are you sure they will be here tomorrow? It looks like they are leaving.”

“Yes Andy. They will be here ... tomorrow. Their village is not far but they do not like outsiders to come there. They come when the sun rises and leave when it goes. They also watch over this place. Come, we must prepare for our stay.”

I didn’t argue. I just picked up my travois and followed Keela to where we would be staying. She led me down one of the side paths to an open area that I can only describe as a private campsite. There was a communal fire pit and the entire area was surrounded by dense growth, further divided by small clumps of a bamboo like plant. Each of the smaller areas had its own fire pit and room for a tent. This would have been a hell of a location for a resort if it were back on our old world. Takim walked up as I unloaded the tent.

“Andy, you are the leader of our clan. You should leave the work to the others.”

I set the pole I had in my hand and picked up another. “Takim, have you not realized that I would not ask another to do something I am not willing to do myself? With the travois, since I am taller, I could not ask someone else to carry my load because there is not another as tall to help me. The tents must be set up. I am familiar with this type, even though it appears to be one made here. By next gathering, I hope everyone will have one like it.”
