The original Blaise Pascal was a French philosopher, theologian and mathematician. Among other things, he invented the first commercially available mechanical calculator, he (and Pierre de Fermat) virtually invented the modern study of probability, and he invented the hydraulic press.
A quarter century ago I was asked to choose an online alias and decided on Blaise Pascal (not realizing that typical choices were things like "Captain Midnight", "Danger Mouse", and the like). I've kept the nom-de-net ever since.
