I'm British by nationality, English by birth, and have led a fairly blameless existence for more than six decades. My wife and I have two children and two grandchildren - and none of these people is aware of my alter ego's stories on this website. (I think!)
I'm not going to explain British geography and culture: if you are baffled by any of it, please find out, or at least ask. But note that many of the stories here are from writers based in places like the USA and Australia, and I haven't come across anyone yet who feels the need to explain the nature of their country and its way of living. A publisher once told me that we have to "Americanise" our story or novel "otherwise the Americans won't read or understand it". I think this is so derogatory, and I prefer to treat them as intelligent human beings.
