Religious and promiscuous

Quasirandom 🚫

I'm looking for contemporary stories with characters who are devoutly religious and sexually active outside of marriage. Any religion acceptable—though around here I suspect most examples will be Christian—as long as their religion is an active part of their daily life. Despite the clever rhyming subject line, they don't have to be constantly sleeping around, but they do have to be (or become) sexually active.

You can take it as read that I know several of Tedbiker's stories fit. Any others?

TIA

Good Medicine Series by Michael Loucks.

Six stories posted on SOL so far, with book 7 being posted here starting 1 June 2022. Check his author's page for more details.

Stupid Boy series by G. Younger. He's a Christian believer, very much on the lines of Augustines "Lord make me chaste, but not yet!"

Eh. Honestly, the title character doesn't read as all that religious. He sometimes attends church and some of his ethics probably derive from Protestantism, but he shows very few signs of personal faith. He's more culturally Christian than anything.

There's a great difference between being religious and a church goer. In the story you slowly learn he has some very deep set beliefs and he believes in God, but he has some serious issues with the senior church leadership and some of the church doctrine.

Like the main character in the Chaos Music series, he can differentiate between his religious beliefs and what the church teaches.

Not to be too picky, but if you have strong beliefs that are in conflict "what the church teaches", are they "religious beliefs" or "spiritual beliefs?"

@DBActive

religious beliefs are what an individual has while religious doctrine is the belief structure of an organised church.

What is interesting is the number or organised churches that have books of scripture they claim they draw their doctrine from but then have huge amounts of their doctrine that are at odds with what's in the scriptures and they also have a number of senior members of the church leadership who profess teachings at odds with the scriptures and the doctrine.

I think Peter Duncan wrote/is writing a series of stories about a teenager (Toby Wakefield) and a convent of nuns. Might fail the contemporary test because IIRC it's written as a reminiscence.

I think HAL's charming 'Four Go' series also qualifies. Start with 'Four Go Sailing'.

I'll check out Duncan, then. Depending on the actual setting, probably counts as contemporary.

Hadn't realized that about the "Four Go" series—and "Sailing" is already downloaded to my ereader, so that's perfect.

Thanks!

Aroslav's series starting with Team Manager SWISH! has the main character, his mother, and several of his girlfriends being religious, and attending church.

By the middle of the first book he has a harem of 9 girlfriends; albeit he is not having sex with all of them. Through the second book he appears to be a wimp and geek. Most people presume he is more their "mascot" or "pet"

A plurality of the local community, and the church congregation judge more on Actions of charity and other good works by the MC and his "harem" although there are some who are judgemental.

The Team Manager series seems to perfectly match your request.

That does indeed fit my request. I've read the first book, and am waiting for the series to finish before continuing. Thanks.

You might check out "Car 54"

It's complete, but I have not finished reading it. So, I think it fits what you are seeking. But, I am not sure.

It is set in 1968 Alberta, Canada (although the date is only referred to about halfway into the story). Nominally, it is about Dirt Track Racing, and farming/ranching.

It is set in the "Canadian Bible Belt" and various events (or history of events) tie into the story. Also, there were some members of the LDS ("Mormons") [in particular a sect practicing polygamy present]. The MC has religious faith, though is not particularly enamored of religious higherarchy...

I am at a part of the story where the MC and several other characters are discussing their religious beliefs/perspectives.

I think this story might be close to what you are looking for.

What I have read so far is well written. I think you would enjoy it.

Oh ho — haven't met this one. Stretching things as far as contemporary, but sounds indeed like what I'm looking for. Thanks!
