Contemporary non-English-speaking countries

Quasirandom ๐Ÿšซ

So WTSman sets a lot of stories in Denmark, and DeeBee has Finland covered. Whatsisname (has "old" in his handle?) has his many tales of harems of Filipinas, though usually they speak English, IIRC. And there's most of the stories with the Indian Erotica tag.

What other contemporary, non-fantasy stories are set in places where English isn't the native language, and the story is assumed to be told in translation?

I'm not sure what you mean by "told in translation." In my novel "Lonely War Widows," some chapters take place in Italy where everyone is speaking Italian. But the chapters are written in English, including the dialogue. The reader is told they're speaking Italian because the reader is told the American is speaking fluent Italian.

Now there are other chapters in Italy where they're speaking English or maybe broken English. When Italian is spoken, the Italian is in italics.

For that matter, my novel "High School Massacre" has chapters in Mexico where they're speaking Spanish but it's written in English.

That's exactly what I mean by "told in translation" โ€” characters are speaking another language, which we read in English.

VeryWellAged. Has more stories on his own site than the ones on SOL. There are a lot of "Dialects" in the Philippines, which are languages despite the name used there. Some of his characters speak one or more of them in addition to English. Fortunately VeryWellAged translates them so you don't miss much conversation.

Ah ha. Now we just need to find Norway and Iceland to complete the set.

AWLL1 Book 3 is set in Sweden, AWLL2 Book 7 has a lengthy section set in Japan. There are also lengthy trips to England, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, and South America at other points in the series.

A good chunk of Good Medicine - Medical School I is set in Europe.

Both are part of my A Well-Lived Life Universe

Uncle Jim has several of his stories set in Thailand; and some other stories have characters in the US speak Gaelic.

I think I read some of Uncle Jim's Thailand stories. Thanks for the reminder.

Uncle Jim's Thailand

The current one, about two dragons, is set in several countries in the same part of Asia as Thailand, mostly its neighbors but Tibet is likely up real soon.

Actually, it started in Thailand, went to Cambodia, back to Thailand, then Nepal and the last posted chapter saw them arrive in the part of China that used to be Tibet.
