I've read the sadly incomplete and inactive story The private by random writings and more recently Ace cadet Leon young by Shaddoth and have enjoyed the stories to do with mech technology, warfare, space battles etc and was hoping that i could get some suggestions for more long stories in that theme
Would powered armor do in place of mechas? If so, try The Healer by QM. It's certainly got the space battles.

This is VERY good story. It's long and filled with battles but there is a hero with issues and he develops and grows as a person as the story expands. He starts as a private, with some flashbacks to explain his past and ends as a Count on a new planet where he and his family are movers and shakers. Most of the combat involves very large armored Mechs which have lasers, missiles, machine guns, and armor in varying amounts. Some can jump and others fly.
I understand it is based on a game some of you have heard of before. The story does not require any familiarity with the game. Its set in interstellar space long after current era. There is so much detail there is no point in trying to give an explanation of what happens in the story. A young man grows up and succeds in his carrer of being a Mech pilot and officer of a mercenary military force. If you like war stories you should be happy with this one.
I am going to give the plot a ten. There are lots of twists and turns and unexpected developments occur with little warning. The technical quality is pretty good, considering the length of the story. I saw a few creative spellings or errors but not enough to throw me out of the story. Lets give it a nine. I try very hard only to give one story a month a ten, and I already used my ten for May, so this is a nine. Six is a C. Seven is a B, Eight is an A. This is an A plus.

Also by this author, "Birth of Shadow" has Mechs.
I don't know if they are on here anymore, but Ka Hmnd [aka Ken Hammond elsewhere] had several stories about mechs and space armor, including one about a guy who built mechs like those in the Matrix.

'Fighting Machine' by Ka Hmnd is a short story about a man who makes his living as a hacker, but his hobby is building fighting mechs which he then uses gladiator style. The OP actually mentions 'Fighting Machine'. Zellus is looking for a longer story with more of the mech gladiator combat.

Ace Cadet Leon Young by Shaddoth.
I'm only on chapter 4 of 11 at the moment so I won't comment, but it's got a very good score.
The Subjugation-series by Fel (weavespinner, search-enfine of choice should get you there) has some mech-combat, with a lot of tech, space-warfare, political intrigue, romance and a whole lot more
But then, at I think now 9 volumes, some of which are above 1k pdf pages, there's enough "story" there to cover a great many subjects.
Small warning, the protagonist needs a bit of time to get the really cool toys (as in, mechs, battleships and so on)
Very much worth a read, to the point that I'm re-reading it for the fifth or so time.
