I've mostly seen this with the destination being somewhere in the wild west, rather than any of the big events like wars. The best I've read was Joe J's El Paso.

Jack commits the cardinal sin of dozing off in the subway on the way home from a boring job in Brooklyn. He is on one of those ancient trains from yesteryear and wakes up on a no longer existent elevated track on the east side of Manhattan 150 years earlier. The fifth Magic Ink story by Uncle Jim has members of the family being sent to an alternate reality where we did not win the Revolutionary War. The time is the early 1800s, with the British in control of the coastal colonies, and the Americans still fighting from the lands west of the Appalachians.
