Life Onboard a Militaristic Spaceship

babyblasphemy ๐Ÿšซ

I've recently finished everything available of Kid Wigger's Flight of the Code Monkey and loved all of the descriptions of operating oh the Glenndeavor as well as the strong female characters like 1LT Shellbee. Are there any other well written stories that include these elements?

The only one I know of is living a cap based present, a Swarm universe story. This is actually the second volume, the first is all setup on earth with almost no military action, and no ship life. I'm not sure how much this will appeal to you. A lot of this is the mc kind of inventing space navy policy from scratch since the ships ai is so inexperienced at it and no one on board knows what they are doing.

I'm fond of this story, it feeds into my fetish for competency porn, the mc is clearly more competent than anyone else, and it was my introduction to the Swarm Cycle.

Thanks for this suggestion. I've seen Swarm Cycle stories on the site, but I've been unsure what order to read them in. I'll probably just sort by upload date and go from there, but there sure are a lot of them!

Most of them seem disconnected, and from what I've read they all take the time to explain the basics of the universe. Any order is probably fine

I believe you should start with the foundational story Average Joes by the creator of the Universe Thinking Horndog.

After that it really doesn't matter much. Many stories do not have a defined place in the timeline. Think of it as reading different accounts of history.

Well, there are a few mini series within the universe. The mini-series might not have a defined place in the overall timeline, but it does have a definite internal timeline and the stories to the mini-series have a definite order.

Feral Lady's 2nd Solon novel has a bit of that.

I'll definitely add this universe to my To Do list, the description sounds interesting!

Dead tree - The fourteen (or so) novels of the Honor Harrington trilogy.

First book - On Basilisk Station - is available free on the Baen Free Library page. Lots of good free science fiction available there.

Second HH book Honor of the Queen is also there.

Other books with spaceships or travel and strong female characters - Agent of Change - original novel of Steve Miller/Sharon Lee's Liaden universe and With the Lightnings - beginning of Drake's RCN (Rep Cinnabar Navy) novels.

beginning of Drake's RCN (Rep Cinnabar Navy) novels.

Love the series, hate his government. But the rest of the galaxy isn't better.

It seemed like a combination of Republican Rome, with 19th century Britain; whose ruling elite consciously tried to emulate some Roman aspects.

Also Dead Tree Press,Mike Shepard's Kris Longknife series are similar to the Honor Harrington books. IIRC she is princess to a very newly minted space dynasty, its not quite clear if Grandpa negotiated his way into being King, or if it was forced on him to keep him out of parliament. Put in the space navy to keep her out of jail, she works her way up through the ranks, defeating aliens, enemy humans and political plotters.

If you don't mind a slight compromise, some of the stories in Snekguy's Pinwheel Universe might appeal.

Try all 3 stories by GreenDragon here on SOL.

How about books by:
Mike Cropo
Vanessa Ravencroft
a couple of John Wales stories like Space and Tandra and Leeftic
The Private (incomplete) by Random Writings
A Life in the Service by Ka Hmnd. Kenneth has a number of stories with military spaceships, but they are mostly pretty short.

The following generally include military aspects, but the main character(s) are in a small group on a semi-private warship:
Privateer by DaRat
Starlight 300 by JAX
Scout by Warlord and finished by FantasyLover
Three Square Meals by Tefler (sort of military)

On scifistories: Pars001 Lost Empire has lots of military spaceships and space battles. Still in progress and slow in updates but a long read to catch up.
It's also on SOL: Lost Empire.
