Forum: Story Recommendations

Set in the past.

Looking for stories realistic, historical, or fantasy set with swords or muskets.

I like history and reading stories set in those even with twist or elves and magic are to my go to.

Do you have any recommendations that are like this? Any would do that are somewhat set in those world with nobilities. Be it normal ones or high fantasy ones.

Must include sex of course that's why I ask here and not google. It doesn't have to be an erotica I much prefer it used to spice up the story and not be the center of it. I also don't shy away from darker stories with rape and gore like dominion but if it gets too emotional then it's a no no. Plot yes tragedy no.

But if you really think that it's a must read even without sex then throw it in here! Thanks!

Try the Anthony Carter universe by Argon ...

Also Argon's Knights and Commoners series:

I read this one, my only dismay is with the ending. The author raised questions about Anthony's children but did not tackle them. Why is Emily being stubborn? Maybe a bit of Richard developing relationship with his father? I felt like I was given then denied a candy after a meal.

I've just started reading the Damsels in Distress Universe (haven't moved beyond those by the universe's creator, Lazlo Zalezac yet), and they seem to fit your criteria.

Some of FantasyLover's stories might fit the bill.

1. The Earl's Man
2. Escape From Lexington
3. The Goatherd
4. Lucky Jim 1 - Firehair
5. Of Honor and Betrayal
6. Spirit Quest
7. When in Rome
8. Young Warrior

Note that in Spirit Quest and When in Rome the main character starts in the 20th century and is transported to the past.

I like his works but I just can't seem to stick to it as the story( I only read earls man and lucky Jim) seems to always be on the mc's favour and the process of completing objectives is lacking development for me.

He also added a harem and an implication of sex and sometimes the two doesn't go well in some scenes in my opinion.

His lucky Jim story though did give interest to the old west setting and how I discovered Tom's adventure.

These too like the old west stories are an interest of mine to read.

Have you read Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen by H. Beam Piper? It's mainstream sf set in an alternate dimension with technology at about the 16th/17th century level.

An excellent historical fiction author is Samuel Shellabarger, who wrote in the late 1940s. My favorites by him are:

Captain From Castile - 16th C. conquest of the Aztecs.

Prince of Foxes - 16th C. renaissance Italy and the Borgias.

The King's Cavalier - 16th C. France during reign of Henri IV.

I should probably mention that all (or nearly all) of Rafael Sabatini's works are in the public domain and available for download on the internet. And most of them contain what the OP is looking for. Probably Sabatini's most popular book is Captain Blood, about pirates in the Caribbean during the 17th Century.

Kris Me has Keltria stories and characters bouncing around history from circa 70000 BC to early 22nd century ... humans, fairies, dragons, shapeshifters, space travel, transport circles, mages, wizards, queens and emperors/empresses ... and a lot of AUS characters ...

Lots of interesting stuff here, I've been dying for these kinds of stories. Specially those with a twist. Have you guys read 1632? That's a nice what if.

I forgot to put into the post but hopefully non of these are purely romance. =3=

Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres along with Fantasy and Scifi. A quick search pulls up mostly Argon as previously mentioned But also some more recent history than you requested. Honky Tonk Hero by JoeJ Viet Nam era, Depression Soup by WordyTom set in the great depression.

The Tides of War by Robin Lane is l890s-WWI with a lot of combat type scenes and probably closer to what you are looking for. There is also a sequel which I have not read so I won't comment on it.

I've read 1632 and 1633 with 66 more stored and on my reading list. You listed some I don't have but that can wait until I have read everything else :D

Remember, the series is base on the work of not only Eric Flint but also the contributions of a myriad of authors. The Granville Gazette pays professional rates for short stories and fact articles.

The Richard Sharpe series about 20 books, set before, during and after the Napoleonic Wars.

For historical fiction in dead-tree I'd recommend George MacDonald Fraser, especially his Flashman books. I can't think of any of the Flashman books where he doesn't have sex multiple times, sometimes at risk of his life, and even to save his life. GMF researched the history well for the books, and includes notes through the stories giving odd bits of history and noting where he couldn't fit the story into the strict historical record. GMF's The Pyrates is another that should fit the request.

Scotland-the-Brave has some stories that might be of interest.
