a medium length story
I have no tearstained pages to recommend, but I would like to get some discussion about what length qualifies as "medium" here on SOL. With some obvious exceptions that go on for years and years and have multiple volumes, I think 35 chapters or more (up to 45 chapters) is a long story. Less than 3 chapters probably is a short story. If it makes it to ten or more chapters, it probably isn't even a medium length story. Now the number of words in a chapter can vary significantly, and I certainly have been wrong before, but how do the readers looking at this post feel how long a medium length story runs?
I think 35 chapters or more (up to 45 chapters) is a long story.
For me, that would be highly dependent on the lengths of the individual chapters.
kw=kilo word=1000 words
A 35 chapter story with an average chapter length of 1kw or less would not be a particularly long story, it would be shorter than a 12 chapter story with a 4kw average chapter length.
Most of the dead tree novels I read are in the range of 15-24 chapters with a chapter length in the range of 4-8 kw.
For me, the absolute bottom end for what can be called a novel without considering genre is 50kw
I would consider anything under 20kw total to be a short story. Anything longer than 20kw and shorter than 50kw would be a medium story.
For me, that would be highly dependent on the lengths of the individual chapters.
I agree since I know of a story here that is a single chapter - but it has over 100000 words.
Number of chapters on SOL is not a good measure of how long a story is. Some authors consistently use relatively short chapters. Others consistently use chapters that go over multiples of SOLs auto page-break. Others tend to go all over the place in terms of chapter length. I suggest comparing the size of the files, that would be a more consistent measure.
comparing the size of the files, that would be a more consistent measure.
Compare the site-reported size, not the size of saved files, since at present any saved filed are bloated by about 20k of included css in each chapter, whereas files saved a while back had the css as a separate file.
Why the constant barrage of story recommendation requests? Do you actually read the stories suggested?
Perhaps you should make more use of the random story function - you might get some pleasant surprises.

Why the constant barrage of story recommendation requests? Do you actually read the stories suggested?
I do actually read the stories reccomended to me(i spend my entire night reading and am a speed reader. by entire night i mean until anywere between 3 and 5 oclock in the morning. if that makes you worry for my sanity for some reason don't i don't need alot of sleep. 3 hours at the least and i'm perfectly fine for the next day or night.). the reason for my constant barrage of requests serves 2 purposes. purpose 1 i'd like to have something ready to read after i've fininshed the story i'm on. purpose 2 sometimes(alot of the time) when i'm not reading my mind wonders to things i think would be cool to read or see in an anime.
on the topic of random stories there are way to many story if combined properly could ruin my entire week for that to be an option. why take that chance when there are people that have been here for longer than my meager 6-7 months? also i try to reccomend when i see something i've read that someone is asking for. So it's not like i'm taking from everyone and not giving anything back(at least i hope not) i detest people like that almost as much as i detest cheaters.
also i quite enjoy some of the discussions that happen on this forrum so why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone? i get stoies reccomended and i'm able read discussions that happen at the same time. plus the the time in which i post compared to when i check back is alway atleast 4-5 hours.

200-300k Short novels
300-500k medium length novels
500-1000k long novels

Personally *My* File size to story length gauge runs like this
k what? Bits? Bytes? letters? words?
If the chapters are going to be less then 10k just wait till you finish the story before posting it.
I have dropped a number of stories because they would post a short chapter that you could read within 5-10 minutes with a week or more apart.
