Some have made me belief they are indeed quite thoughtful and intelligent.

I regularly question my own beliefs without need of a story. My father taught me to do that as a child.

As for stories, some provide insight, but most don't. Some that have were the works of Heinlein, Asimov, Bradbury, Wells, Card etc.
