features some if not all of these.
Male mc
abused childhood
childhood friend/girlfriend
leaving home when young
returning home when older
etc
Recommend me whatever you got. Lesser known stories are a plus and the longer the better.

Flawed Diamond by Jay Cantrell has several of those.
The Dark Days stories from Reluctant Sir also has several of those elements.
The Ed Walters stories from Burnt Redstone also contain a bunch of them.
Iskander's Through My Eyes Again contains a number of those, but a bit differently
Another Reluctant Sir entry... Echo, covers all of them, in a fashion.
Read all of those ty tho. I've probably read everything by every big author on sol so im looking for lesser known stuff.
Have you tried Latakia's Blacktower stories? The MC didn't leave until college, but he ended up returning after a serious detour...
Blacktower
Not exactly what i'm looking for but looks interesting enough so ill give it a go, thanks.
I don't agree with Flawed Diamond or Ed Walters. Yes, they have some elements OP requested, but they are missing the main one, the title of the thread, i.e returning home.
Great stories however, and if OP isn't set on returning home" stories, you should give them a read if you haven't already!
the longer the better
I'm hesitant to bring my story up because it's definitely not long. Just the opposite. It's flash fiction because the writing contest it was entered in (Writer's Digest) required the maximum number of words to be 750. I think I ended up with a 749 word story. Which, by the way, was the hardest writing I ever did. I was well over 1,000 words before I even got into it and then struggled to keep it under 750 words.
The contest was to write a 750 or less word story about someone who returns to their childhood home and finds it condemned. So it's not about the MC leaving home, but leaving his childhood home and girlfriend only to return when older.
Anyway, it's a no sex tear jerker called "Coming Home." (There are several with that name, but only one by me.)
It's probably not what you're looking for.
Thanks for the rec but your right, its not for me. I usually don't even read short stories at all as i feel they aren't worth getting invested into but maybe one day my mind will change on that.

'Finding Jessica' is another very good story about a soldier coming home from the war and rebuilding his relationship with the girl who hurt him before he left.
