Video Games, MMORPG

rymer221b ๐Ÿšซ

Are there any stories where the MC lives in a video game type world, or is transported to one.
Something like The Wolves by Exigaet or A New Beginning by Ka Hmnd. Preferably long stories with lost of chapters. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yeah. I'll have to look it up, but a couple months back there was one. And the recent 'Axeman' really seemed to follow a video game style too.

the "Godless and Faithless" stories are reasonably good for the genre. Still can't remember the name of the other one, where a guy gets pulled to some afterlife set up by several pantheons that follows gaming rules where 'worshipers' of different gods compete for the glory of their patron. It was fairly interesting.

Category search. Search for the GameLit tag under story types.

They won't all be based on video games, but that's where you'll most likely find the kinds of stories you are looking for.

Unless OP has a premier account, that won't help much.

Why not? Just because he can't do category exclusions?

Nope. Basic accounts get 10 selections only, with no way too sort the query request. So without adding more and more tags, you'll keep getting the same stories (or nothing, if you get too many tags).

I'd be curious to know how many authors and readers here ever played an MMORPG or even MMO. I know my son has, and generally what they are, but they strike me as something for the younger crowd.

Barely social these days. Between Steam, Origin, Battle.net, Discord, and Twitch, there is little need for most people to actually talk to the people they're playing with, unless they're playing with people from one of the previously mentioned platforms.

Until things reach the point of near full immersion for MMO's, World of Warcraft between 2004 and sometime before 2009 was probably "peak MMORPG" in terms of social immersion in the content(a strong case could be made for 2006-ish from my own memory of things, as most guilds had started insulating themselves from everyone else on third party voice chat platforms by then). In Modern WoW people might think you're crazy if you try to socialize with them in game. It's largely turned turned into a single player Action RPG on a subscription platform.

I used to play on a MUD. Player meet ups could be fun, with people from all walks of life, some of whom I would never think to interact with otherwise. Game play became repetive XP grinding and the admins were going through the strange mental breakdown that seems to have recently affected Wizards of the Coast, leading to SJWitis and censorship of opposing ideas via shouting down and labeling the other side as bigoted, racist, etc.

One admin had political connections and a privileged background, he admitted he didn't leave his room for six weeks, pissing into bottles and living on Pizza. A senior coder had a mental breakdown and left his high level IT job, not going outside for a year while quoting Nietsche on the chat channel. Another was institutionalized for two years, she had been a ministerial staffer in a commonwealth nation. The founder travelled the world to visit meet ups but would not wash.
I decided that the game either attracted borderline individuals or the lack of time spent interacting in the real world was harmful to mental health, so I quit.

Damn, that sounds worse than some drug or alcohol addictions.

They were fun. Massive time-sink, but fun.

I thought it was amusing, the one were in less than three days I had the highest-leveled character on the site. (The designers REALLY didn't take into account that they might get people really good at math using their customizable player classes.)

I have played various MMOs over the last 20+ years starting with Ultima Online. I mostly stick to the Elderscrolls franchise these days. I prefer non-linear open world type games. And for the record I am much closer to 60 than 50. My experience is that it is like an interactive story, not much different than putting a fantasy book in front of my face.

Blades is a nice little time waster.
Never got into ESO - played the beta, didn't like it.
But Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim .... yeah, may have a few thousand hours in those.

@anim8ed

Oblivion and Skyrim I've played. Neither would match the MMO qualification to my mind. Is there something I'm missing there?

Elder Scrolls Online would be what I think the reference was to.

I tried. I was part of the beta. I didn't care for WoW, so that may have nene part of it. That, and I had a real job, so staying up late for raids and such couldn't happen.

@bk69

Yes, Elder Scrolls Online is what I was referring to in regard to MMOs. I started with Oblivion when it came out way back when and have enjoyed the franchise since.

As mentioned on here, there are a few based on this, a couple of my faves are:
My Isekai Life in D&D โ€” a series by NoMoshing,
Would You Like To Play Again โ€” a series by James Howlette,
Axeman by Shaddoth.

Of course there's the whole Damsels in Distress Universe too which whilst not in a game world, is travel to a medieval world.

The two that he mentioned that I had already mentioned fit OPs requirements. The Isekai stories, tho.. no.

Radagast ๐Ÿšซ

Yep. Those guys were permanently logged in for years at a time, spending 8 hours a day playing or coding while holding down jobs - until they couldn't. They stopped being themselves and became the fake persona they created to interact on line. They would build a house on line, furnish it, invite players to party in it, get engaged and have an in game wedding with invited guests, etc.
Looking back on it, the ones who introduced themselves by their player name at meet ups were the ones who ended up with mental problems. The players who introduced themselves with their real name seemed to be fine. They also moved on to other interests after a while.

The ones who need divine help aren't the OCs, it's everyone else in the OCs's life.

Um ...

Legacy of a Legend - MC is the Dragonborn from Skyrim

Love Never Changes - MC is the Sole Survivor from Fallout 4

https://storiesonline.net/s/18093/cop-in-a-fantasy-world by aubie56 10 chapters

Jill Humphries, a NYC cop, is shot in the head in the line of duty, but she wakes up in a fantasy land, revived by a witch doctor named Nux. She becomes a barbarian warrior fighting demons and monsters. She marries an indigenous warrior named Almo. They both take it upon themselves to rid the country of evil demons and monsters, and this is their story. 10 chapters. This story was suggested by the Diablo III video game, but is in no way a direct copy.

@rymer221b

Try Virtual Reality Gaming Trilogy a series by Bingain. Chapters are not that long however/
