What is your Favorite on SOL

Awakelate 🚫

I am interested to know what everyone thinks is the best (favorite) story here. The one that pulled you in or titillated you the most. For whatever reason what is your number one.

Radagast 🚫

@Awakelate

Completed works? Longform would be Lifeline by Jay Cantrell. It is a detective story that wraps up all loose ends. The story simply feels complete when I read the last line. No sex, very minimal action, just believable characters interacting.
https://storiesonline.net/s/11098/lifeline-drama-story

Words by Jezzaz is my pick for top short story, the ending of a a marriage in one scene.

Very honourable mentions to Banadin's Richard Jackson saga, RLFJ's A Fresh Start & Grim Reaper series, Jay Cantrell's Unending Night & sequel, G. Youngers Stupid Boy series, Boston to Birmingham by Qhml1 and Depression Soup by Wordy Tom.

Duelwriter does a fairly good job with descriptions. From the story "Oh boy."

A baseball story from T-ball to majors. Since I love baseball, the Muse was yelling in my ear so here is some fun from/for me. "WARNING" There is a lot of sex in the early chapters so those offended by sex stuff, beware. Read the codes.. don't bitch because this one has a lot of sex. There is a plot that develops so it's not all sex especially in the later chapters.

He also does a good job in lead up to, and exiting sex scenes. For me, that's excellent. I don't normally read stories listed as lots or much sex as many of them have no plot to speak of. At least with his, it's correctly tagged and with warning. I enjoyed the story as I could easily pass over the parts I didn't want to read and still follow it with ease.

Yea it was a good story but the one thing that bugged me in this and other later stories were all the women were squirters.

(3) BarBar

(4) Gina Marie Wylie

and

Any stories from them are worth reading.

Also many might write in genres you (or others) are not familiar with.

I know quite a few in here write extensively in say the NiS or Swarm universes. And many are probably excellent, but since I do not read those I have likely not read much of their writing.

The same with the Incest tag. Especially when almost every family member box is checked off. It is not that I am against it per se, it is just that so many of the "kitchen sink" stories tend to be bad, so as a general rule I normally avoid them now.

Also I noticed some readers avoid either really long stories, or really short stories. Others avoid any series that is not complete (and with so many in here incomplete after years I can not blame them).

Many of us write primarily in specific genres, and if it not one that catches the interest of a specific reader, so be it.

I always love when you see 15 or more tags checked for a story that is only 2-3k long.

Which I actually tried to make fun of in one I wrote called "Stories Online Heaven". I literally wrote a 6k story (purposefully badly), and tried to include absolutely every tag that I could into it. That was when I found out we are restricted to ONLY having 50 tags. *laugh*

I think the most tags I have is for "Dark Tales", at 43 tags. But that is also a (so far) 13 chapter anthology of almost 400k, and if I write a new chapter that involves a new tag I add it. And because each chapter is a completely different story, that means it has a lot more tags than I would ever use normally.

steve6134 🚫

Re incomplete stories I am one of those readers who avoids incomplete stories I will wait for all chapters to post it all even for authors who I trust to complete the story. An author who posts incomplete works has not posted a Story just an elaborate Outline

I don't have one single favorite. There are a lot of real gems of stories and very good authors on SOL. Most are already mentioned in this thread.
My 'favorite' changes with my mood. Mostly in the SciFi/TT/DO and the none/minimal sex range but I don't limit myself to those genres. If I would have a single favorite it would have to be one of the authors that I already like and he would have to supply a continuing stream for me to read, something you can not expect from any author. I probably read more than any author could create to keep up with my reading, even all my 'favorites' combined can't keep up :)
"Fortunately" I have a coming and going CRS problem so re-reading is a big part of my reading. I'm currently re-reading Refusenik's Human Phoenix for the 4th time (I think).

Favored author is Lazlo for the sheer volume of extraordinary stories. There are a bunch in second, but Lazlo is head-and-shoulders above anyone else IMHO.

My favorites vary from day to day. Right now, I am sorely missing the MLB season. I spend the entire winter waiting for pitchers and catchers to report for spring training as a sign that I've survived another winter and can look forward to about eight months of baseball. It's generally accepted among athletes and scientists that the most difficult accomplishment in sports is to hit a ball that is only 3" in diameter and traveling at 93 mph with a stick that is 2.6" in diameter. The better hitters can not only hit that ball more than 30% of the time, they can also pull the ball to the opposite field. Even a dog can catch a freaking frisbee!

My list of favorite authors has varied over the many years I have been on SOL.

Mostly it has involved adding new names to the list, but there are a few that due to the author's attitude have not only gotten dropped from my favorite list, they actually have gone on my 'avoid' list.

Nizzgrrl 🚫
Updated:

@Awakelate

I considered your request and it took me on a long trip to the intersection of Memory Lane and CRS. I was a refugee from ASSM when I found SOL and I have never left.

To respond to your suggestion, I looked through my Files by Author library from ~792x57 to the now anonymous ZZTurk. Oh, what memories you have helped me revive. As I toured my library, I made a little list to reduce the number of authors to consider from 1200+ writers whose stories I saved dating back to 1995 to 204. I tried to identify those who drew me in and who kept me here.

I further condensed that list, but it doesn't seem all that much shorter. It includes Argon, CWatson, A Strange Geek, Morgan, Alexis Seifert, MTWB, Andrew Wiggins, Wizard, aroslav, Russell Hoisington, Aubie56, BE287m, Young Thinker, Celtic Bard, Wandering Lanes, Oosh, Celtic Cowboy, The Scot, Dot B, E.Z. Riter, Eros!, Hammingbyrd7, Fable, FantasyLover, Sourdough, Fick Suck, Happy Hugo, Paul Phenomenon, Heathen57, QHML1, Reallifedragon, Rdragon, Rellik, Don Lockwood, Robert McKay, Rod O'Steele (Anoninsac), Rotedrachen, Rougher63, Cold Creek, RPSuch, Sagacious, Scorpio00155, Scouries, Scotland-the-Brave, Lazlong, Spiller, Stickland83, Switch Blayde, Yellow Snow (Night Wolf), TexRep, Thinking Horndog, Timm, T-Rix, Tony Stevens, Uncle Jim, Uncle Sky, Volentrin, Uther Pendragon, Westside24, Wiseguy, Woodmanone. I hope I have not tapped too many alter egos here.

I omitted those writers who were already identified by others: Dual, RLFJ, Jay, Ernest, Lazlo, Oyster50, Refusnik, et al.

The list capper for me is Always Loved Her by General Principle from 2002. That one was a grabber that has kept on grabbing. I'm a romantic - so sue me.

I deliberately listed many authors who might be overlooked. I do not often see their names included in discussions or requests. I don't want them to be lost among the young'ens. Hey y'all - oldies can be goodies - just a little dated maybe. [SOL - Thank you for your Random nudge nudge.]

Multiple good authors there. But the OP was looking for a specific story singular, not a list of authors.

ETA: After some more thought, a list of authors was probably a better response. A singular story doesn't help as many readers of this thread.

Shinerdrinker 🚫

@Awakelate

Well, that's a couple of different questions right there, ain't it?

The story that pulled me in was "Alan" by Julian Coreto. It's not finished and it's not considered one of the best stories on this site but it was the first story that brought me here to read. It's not even finished but I can always hope for a continuation. I even have a short story I wrote a few years ago in the same universe but have not published it anywhere since I can't get any permission from Julian for an homage.

Then Bluedragon's John Billionaire series forced me to begin spending an inordinate amount of time searching the site and reading the great (and not so great) writers.

But my favorite is one brought up by many others, Island Mine by Refusenik. I find myself every few months or so going back and re-reading a single part but then find myself just starting it over again.

But some of the most fun is finding a new story and enjoying it for yourself.

But being a bit of a self-promoter, I'd also suggest "Mayhem in a Pill" but I hear the writer is kind of an idiot. Well-meaning but still, he's an idiot!

And because of my CRS - I forgot one so funny story that I'm still laughing thinking about it:
"Klutz" by MisguidedChild ...

Thank you

I come to these forums for stories ideas. I am loving this story.

I really appreciate the addition.

Hey everyone thanks for all the recommend works. Many I have read before and many I have not. Like Shiner Drinker, Alan by Julian Coreto was the first story I read here. Wow! That was a long time ago. Anyway, thanks for all your advice I really appreciate it. Like I said before I will take all suggestions.

I may have missed someone recommending stories by VeryWellAged. Many of them are here on SOL, but there are others elsewhere you may find by looking at his blog here. Of course almost all are set in the Philippines and involve one older guy and a lot of Filipinas. Possibly the best is: https://storiesonline.net/s/66813/jakes-journal-the-philippines-joyfully

Not on topi, but why is this thread showing up as unread three years late?

Yeah, I asked myself the same question yesterday.

I suspect it was pushed to the first page because someone wrote a new post in it, and the cookie (this forum uses browser cookies to remember what has already been read) had expired.

Not really sure what my favorite is. Probably A Well Lived Life although it did feel like it started dragging later in but that was probably like 10 million words in or something insane. Honestly always had some issues finding stuff on this site sadly.

A quick google search revealed to me they are on lit. Another story website, it sometimes has things this one is missing.

Or it was struck.

About 10 years or so ago, they went through their archive with a chainsaw, removing any story with individuals under 18 if I remember correctly.

So it may well have been there at one time, but dropped in their purge. I used to post there also, but stopped long ago.

The site rule is 14. That's the cutoff used for removing stories.

Lazeez periodically reviews archived author's stories for under 14 content. He does not categorically remove all of them. He makes case by case decisions based on a number of criteria.

I asked him about it after I saw some older stories show up in the removed list as removed for inappropriate content earlier this year.

Then it must have changed multiple times. Because I have never had characters under 14, but had a lot of my stories removed from there.

My bad, I thought you were referring to SOL.

Nope, another which I will not name which has such "literature".

Our host has asked that we not link to other story sites. He will remove such links when he spots them.

Using a URL redirector service to hide such links is dishonest.

It will probably result in Lazeez removing redirect links too, and rightfully so.
