Thanks Saemon i've read already read the free ones you've suggested, i don't have premier though.
Although I really liked A New Past, I am not seeing it fit what the OP was looking for. I do not recall the bartering/auction parts being emphasized, nor the living off the land. I will not dispute it is long.
Alright, that is true, but I got the feeling they were asking about stories from the other side of the auction. More like stories involving people who go to auctions, estate sales and yard sales looking for bargains and maybe the occasional treasure. People who reuse and re-purpose stuff while adding value.
As I remember it, A New Past's auction is a way to try to set a fair price for something rare.
Try Wes Boyd's The Next Generation, on his spearfishlaketales site. Cattail, available here, has an auction as a plot point and implicit bartering, but is a less good fit (but still worth reading)
