Multi chapter serials with ma/Fa relationship just don't exist, especially when your trying to do a "coming of age story". Most authors from what i have seen tend to lean towards the "realism" side of writing and not the "wish fulfillment" side.

There are a few mt/FA multi chapter stories out there that focus on the mt/FA relationship. The issue for the OP, is that they aren't generally either coming of age stories or vanilla romances.

They tend towards being mother/son incest stories with a BDSM angle where the son, typically late teens (17-19), dominates his mother.

Again, they are a few multi chapter non-incest stories out there if you get outside the vanilla romance angle. Male teen dominates adult female.

And I fail to see why such stories, are "less real" than a vanilla mt/FA romance. In fact, I find the idea of a male teen blackmailing an adult female more plausible in a "real world" sense then a "Cougar" seducing a teen virgin.

Oh? If you know of some long running non harem, non incest, mt/Fa, coming of age (which is what the op is asking for) stories please share them with us. I would definitely like to read those.

Oh and i agree with you that they feel just as real its just that there is a big stigma in our society were older guys can date young girls but god forbid an older woman hook up with a young guy, which i guess is partly the reason we don't have many normal mt/Fa novels.

The point i was trying to make is that what hes looking for just doesn't exist and you can say, "well if you take out this or add this its close" which is not what he is asking for.

Correct, that is a straight mt/Fa novel but its not a coming of age story nor is it long running/serial. What he is asking for just doesn't exist, trust me i have looked. An example would be something like "A Fresh Start" but without the DoOver and with a mt/Fa romance. Legit coming of age story with an older female as the love interest.

The only story i have ever read that somewhat fits this criteria is "you couldn't handle me" by thetalkman and even then that's incest. It has slow seduction and it goes through highschool/college years.

At nearly 900K, It's Always the Quiet Ones is solidly novel length. And the male protagonist is 14, so I don't get why you rule it out as "coming of age".

Its been awhile since i have read It's Always the Quiet Ones but "coming of age" to me always ment a full story from highschool to college to adult life and i don't recall that story going that far. I'll check that story out again later to see if it went that far, maybe i'm remembering it wrong.

When i think of "Coming of Age" i think of stories like A Fresh Start, Hindsight 20/20, OSL, AWLL, etc.

Impossible to do in a normal novel. At that point you are talking an epic length story with a 500K word minimum.

And clearly not all authors take coming of age the way you do. Using Category search with just the coming of age genre, stories range from over 4mb to under 1k.

Perhaps the original poster doesn't share your exceedingly narrow view of "coming of age" stories.

Keeping the younger man with the older woman... The apron strings need to be cut. I can't imagine a story where the younger male is worth respect if he doesn't leave her, at least for a time.

I don't know if such stories exist here, or is applicable on this request, but one scenario I could easily imagine is "come for the daughter, left with the mother" where boy starts with his age or younger girlfriend, but slowly building more serious relationship with her mother that eventually becomes the main. I would imagine the boy as the initiator/active party as well, in both cases.

That's not a bad system to handle the conundrum, I like it. The trick is to keep the older woman out of any sort of sexual teacher role. If you don't, you're not left with a coming of age story if they stay together but a failure to launch one.

Yes, it requires the boy to reach up and take charge over the older women.

A true story.

He was 17 and a virgin, but well read. She was 18, hold back a year in school. He took a bet that he will seduce... a random girl. She was the secret ticket winner. No feelings, a project to show off.

He succeeded, much too easily and stuck with her as she fell for him hard, and he learned that she's troubled submissive, probably abused by one of her mother's boyfriends and at least one of her own previous. His conscience didn't allow to toss her away, she would have sunk totally. Instead he lifted her from quiet grey mouse to a beauty queen, in little over a year.

All for selfish reasons, of course, just to show off, but she seemed happy and gained confidence, too much of it, actually. She cheated on him, blinded by her newfound fame. Eventually an older childhood friend and ex-boyfriend, one before the abusive one, returned in her life, to save her from whoredoom by... knocking her up. They married, and moved away, to live simple and poor, but stable and, well, reasonably happy life.

She had a younger sister, 16 and a virgin when it all started. Sister was the most mature, most sane and by far most talented in that family. He became her home teacher, in math, history, and sex. She initiated the last part, joining in on him with her sister uninvited. Despite that it was strictly professional relationship, or that of a twisted adopted sister, never a possibility of a couple. Eventually he vetted and accepted her boyfriend too, effectively fathering for her, and she moved out into her own life too.

Their mother was 35-ish, And a body not too far over half her age too, not so hot than the youngest, but hotter than the nominal GF. She had been a teenage mom. Daughters had different fathers. She still had emotional maturity stuck in her teens forever, unable to form long term relationships. No relationships at all since that evil guy, never mentioned aloud. Infrequent one night stands. Trust issues, but forever burning desire for something big. Heavy self-conflicted under influence of an older sister, totally evil church woman.

Early on he decided the best approach is to be as honest as reasonably possible with the mother, and dutifully reported next to everything he did with her daughters. Not always explaining why, never truly asking permission for anything, actually treating more as older of three sisters rather than the mother. She may have positioned herself that way too, trying to be a temptress. At that point mother and daughters hardly did talk between themselves.

She adored him, worshipped him, fell in love with him, cleaned up her own life for him and on his advice, but never adopted him, because, yes, she wanted him for herself. He liberated her, in many ways, starting with her religious sister's bullshit. More by accident, the self-nun walked in on quite a wrong moment of him with the daughters, and mom had to side with youngers. Not necessarily good thing to disown sisters, especially over such trivialities, but perhaps necessary. Mom found professional help instead, and between that and him, a lot of issues got sorted out and solved.

By the time they had sex, he was the more mature and more experienced between them already. He also opposed to any mother/daughter combination, however tempting it might seem.

This being a true story, it didn't last, he left her behind soon after her daughters' lives were sorted out, but in arguably better shape than he found each of them, but who could judge. After all, he was the predator in that story.

I liked it better at the pitch than in the longer spiel. The three females sound just terrible. Three odd collections of misery and fuckeduppedness. If I was to write from that skeleton a coming of age story, the success and climax would be him leaving. Maybe their lives improved for knowing him, but his growing up is discovering their lives aren't improving his. His journey is learning to choose women for character and realizing he needs to set his sights higher and thus it ends with him leaving the girls. Not quite the request of the OP.

Or it's a coming of age story for the mother, because despite her age and daughters, she's not quite mature until everything happens. But I think the OP was looking for boy comes of age and gets with the older woman narrative. Not a middle aged woman comes of age and keeps her young lover.

Yeah, he does leave. I was trying to differentiate a semi-tragic this all happened BUT he still left vs an empowering this all happened AND that made him worth enough to leave. Not really in line with the request.

Yeah, you're right. I'm just babbling at length. It's so terrible because it's too close to the reality and I didn't do proper work to adjust it to the premise.

I also left out that he got into that absurd deal that started it because of his longterm crush on a Queenbee, and, using his Random Girl as a reusable stepp in a ladder of girls among other means went from a loner nerd to a Zack Morris (and collected his pocket money from George Soros, by abusing his own first business), but the installing of Random Girl as beauty queen (what was RG's best friend's idea; and she's another girl of many he flirted with) gave hyenas enough ammunition to tear down the old Queenbee to a status of pariah worse than nobody, and she blamed Him on it.

One story I have tried to write on those days ends here, with him giving up on the Queenbee, refusing the mother's advances, but still effectively co-parenting the younger daughter (presented as Atalanta, while he takes role of Meleager, but purposely holds that relationship from going anywhere because he doesn't want to burn, again (yes, he claims to remember that)), and committing himself to the Random Girl, for now, knowing well it is going to fail eventually, but he feels owing that moment of happiness to her. Kind of "learn to love what you have" and "can't become loved by force," the later partially subverted by the fact the Random Girl still do love him madly at that point, even knowing unknowingly how their relationship come to be.

Another might be full blown harem fantasy...

Another offshoot involves taking another girl by selling her to an unloved friend first, where Random Girl is constantly referenced background character with no screen time for herself, at about the same time the first ends, but ultimately failing that relationship.

Ah, and by the way, the background world for all this was lawless chaos of postsoviet nineties; about everyone's fucked up oddballs one way or another. Well, probably quite alien world for most out here.

And the "choosing women" point he didn't learn, then at least, but kept collecting stray kittens for a while still.

Anyway...

The three women framework I might be after here could be going somewhat like this:

1. A random girl who grows on him despite he uses her and experiments with her, and he grows on own mistakes, eventually she goes away;

2. A fierce little sister to whom he finds himself as person of authority and tries to save from himself, not completely successfully, but eventually he's able to release her (she's probably kind of optional, but I find that dynamic hot);

3. A not quite mature mother with whom he grows up with, chasing and eventually surpassing her, then lifting her with him.

I still don't quite see a long term happy ending, but a happy for now could be construed.

And then there is The Graduate.

Precisely my definition. That's why I love Jaime Lannister's story in ASOIAF. The coming off age of a 33 year old man.
