Hate my tablet

karactr ๐Ÿšซ

I had a rather long post referencing a recent crs episode that my tablet destroyed--yes, I hit the wrong thing...again--agonizing over a sci-fan series from 1969 that I could not remember but eventually refound. I will not try to repeat that post.

I will, however, highly recommend Christopher Stasheff's "The Warlock in Spite of Himself" and it's subsequent books. I will also recommend Harry Harrilson's "Stainless Steel Rat" and its follow ons.

I don't know if these can be found free online. If they can't, I advise buying them. I think I will stop online reading for a bit and go back to my dead tree library.

I agree, I enjoyed the Stainless Steel Rat stories, and Harrison in general!

Harrison is who hooked me on Sci-Fi to begin with. I thought "Stainless Steel Rat" was gripping - just the right amount of humor, mystery and everything else to make the genre come alive for me. I must have prowled bookstores all over looking for new titles for quite some time.

Best part is I think my fiction style tends to lean somewhat in his direction, in my own way. If I hadn't encountered him, there would be a huge hole in my repertoire. Shakespeare didn't work for teaching me about comedic relief, but Harrison sure did. Now it's sitting in the back of my head all the time as I wonder "gee, that was a pretty heavy sequence. How can I lighten things up for a bit?"

And dang, does he blend well with OS Card. Thinkers, both.

Another vote for Harrison. The Stainless Steel Rat series is great and has aged well.
A Transatlantic Tunnel Hurrah! Was my first introduction to alternate history fiction. Great stuff.
Some of his short stories are on Guttenberg, the linked site below has the original covers and tries to get you to sign up to download from Guttenberg through them. Just pick the story you want and go straight to Guttenberg.

Christopher Stasheff died last year. I've read a few of his Warlock books. I found them enjoyable, but not riveting. His list of sequels appears to be longer than John Norman's Gor series, so someone was buying them.
