Stories with the a "damsel in distress" sorta trope?

tomblah78910 🚫

I love stories where the guy "saves" the girl, so to speak. The type of story I'm looking for is definitely romantic, and it would preferably be 18+. Stuff like "Wood Nymph" from SW MO Hermit. Or "8 mile" from an author I can't remember the name of. Can be about homelessness or prostitution or something otherwise novel; but it does need to have at least an air of realism and groundedness, no "I'm a billionaire in disguise!" kinda sappy stuff, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, thanks in advance!

I have not done a statistical analysis on this, but I'd guess at least 10% of the stories on this site fall into that category.
Look at the authors Argon, oyster50 (if you like them very young), tedbiker, colt45, Oz Ozzie, wtsman.

@Dinsdale

Thanks for the suggestions! If you have any more, I'd really appreciate it.

There is a whole genre of 'Damsels in Distress here on SOL. I believe it is a Universe, but it may just be a series.

Was about to suggest this, but if OP is looking for realism, the DiD universe isn't what he's looking for.

Oyster50 wrote the first chapter of a story 'Overboard' then opened it to other writers, it is about a college student who goes on a boat with some acquaintances and finds herself being drugged by one of them, she jumps overboard as they pass another boat and is rescued.

The word has definitely gone mainstream.

The word has definitely gone mainstream.

The meaning of 'trope' has evolved in the creative world. It means a plot artifice that people have come to expect as part of the genre eg red-shirted individuals coming to a sticky end after beaming down to a planet.

Mainstream dictionaries might catch up in a decade or two.

ETA: TVTropes has a near-cultlike status with my writers' group. It's also a depressing reminder of how difficult it is to come up with new concepts for stories.

Not so much difficult in terms of TV writing as the producers reject new ideas, they want the same as before because they want what worked last time not new and thus untried. Bankable means safe to them, new means risky.

Oyster50's Smart Girls start with damsels in distress: Cindy, Nikki and Christina, but all below 18.

In Oyster50's "Road Rash" and "Swamped Fox" the damsels are older than 18.

Nothing is really new. At least as far as relationships go. I read once that all romance/relationship stories are just amalgamations or adaptations of 5 basic plots that are repeated endlessly...that critic credited Shakespeare with covering all 5. I believe they may be correct.

Regarding the OP, I remember reading one about a man who lost his family and then spent his life devoted to rescuing damsels in distress. I think it may have had a Christmas theme, but CRS is a harsh mistress, as I can't remember title or author. I only remember enjoying it.

I DO remember that one of his projects fell in love with him and they ended up together. I also remember it was a fairly short one-off.

Don't get me stated on TV. Most of it is garbage.

ETA Oh, and "Finder's Fee" by colt45

ETA2 https://storiesonline.net/s/19693/the-reclamation-project by OldSarge69 was the one I CRS'd on. I'm rereading it now. It makes me cry. Get off my tip, I'm emotional.

He recycled them from the ancient Greeks, and they openly admitted the ideas were already older than dirt.

I do not disbelieve that. There are only so many ways people can interact. The variations, though, can be both entertaining and enlightening.

Actually Colt45 has a bunch where mc is helping the damsel or in the case of Synergy a whole family of them. It is one of my favorites and humorous as can be.

Okay, so the job sucks, you can't quit and one tiny little indiscretion (I swear she said she was nineteen!) gets you posted to the farthest known edge of the Empire. The place is called Pigsford for Gods sake! So there you are stuck in the boonies for the next decade or so with nothing to do and one day you catch sight of a girl with one of the most perfect asses you have even seen… Maybe things are looking up for once!

Synergy is fun. I re-read it ever couple of years.
