I think this is the story AJ is referring to: Marianne by Uncle Jim
Marianne Riedasel arrived on Earth from the three plus gravity planet Telchines in August of 3995 to attend the Mine Engineering Course at the most the most prestigious mining school available, the Colorado School of Mines. There she discovers that her upbringing and strength are both an asset and a liability. The story follows her adventures at school with her new friend, Will Rugelery.
I knew the story even though I wasn't sure of the title, and that it was by one of my favorite authors so it only took 2 tries to nail it down. It has only been about 6 or 8 months since I had reread it.
Ahh, now you mention it, I remember. I've read and downloaded it in May 2019, nearly seven years ago, and due to my CRS totally forgotten it. I still have the chapters stored on my hard drive and the file dates tell me when I've read the story.
Time to reread.

I believe that there is a story here about a young (20's) female welder, being mentored by a middle aged male welder.
I believe there is at least one sequel.
