Couldn't agree with you more. I'd actually started outlining a plot to a sequel to Human Man, and potentially one to Island Mine, but, not only do I not know the rules about continuing another author's story-line, I'm also bothered by the ethics of it. And of course, though continuations can be begged for, they can't be compelled. Finding one's muse is hard enough without that.
I can't call them to mind now, but I know there are instances where possible authors have discussed a follow-on book with the original author, mainly to get acceptance and if there was anything specific the original author had as to direction, actions, etc.
