Are there any?

ralord82276 ๐Ÿšซ

Are there any SOL stories (preferably very long ones) where MC can speak to animals/has animal telepathy in a modern day setting? I am already aware of Lazlo Zalezac's More Magic but looking for more... hopefully completed.

Female MC returns to family home and gets involved in breaking an ancient curse, destroying the creator along the way.

[Don't know where that other bit came from - I didn't put it there.]

Thank you for the recommendation. I am not much into were- stories but I will check it out.

Have you tried Uncle Jim's Tiger Team stories?

@mauidreamer

Thank You for the recommendation. I haven't looked at the Tiger Team stories yet because I am not much into space operas and I was hoping for stories set in modern (post-industrial, pre-space colonization) times.

Sean David Kilpatrick Flynn by Misguided Child has some ability like this. I've linked the first story of 3.

The mc is an orphan who can communicate with most animals and finds out that he is a magician.

Thank You for the recommendation. I have read this although it has been quite a while...might need to go back and refresh my memory of it.

Another to consider is "William Rodman Carter" by Lazlo Zalezac
It is part of a series.

@rustyken

Thank You for the recommendation. I actually read the entire John Carter series every month or so. Love them. It is true that WRC can talk to animals, but other than a couple of very small scenes it is primarily used as just an "interesting fact" about the MC instead of being an integral part of the story. I am hoping for stories where that ability plays a more central role.

@itsmehonest

Thank you for the recommendations. Most "animal talkers" are in fantasy stories, medieval, far-past, or similar. However, I am primarily interested in stories that take place in the modern era of our Earth (post-industrial, pre-space colonization). I will add these to my list though for further exploration.

Not on SOL, rather paper book form: Hawkmistress from Marion Zimmer Bradley, one of the early books of her Darkover series.

Thank you for the recommendation. I have read most of MZB's works and several of them do include animal telepathy. I do believe that I have read Hawkmistress at one point though not 100% certain atm. Currently looking for more online stories in a modern setting though.

Harry Carton uses animal telepathy in some of his stories, but the only long one I can recall is Lexi Redux.

@awnlee jawking

Thank You for the recommendation. Funnily enough, the only one of Harry Carton's stories I have read is Lexi Redux. IIRC the MC doesn't have animal telepathy but rather telepathy with an AI from the future. However she does seem to have some Indian Spirit Animals that watch over her as she works to change the future under the direction of the AI.
I looked at the descriptions of his other stories and saw a couple that might have animal telepathy so I have added him to my list of authors to check into further.

In The Waabanaw by Harry Carton the mc is a modern american native shaman/medicine man who telepathicly speaks with many animals, especially birds.

Not sure whether Dog and his boy, by wordytom, would meet your criteria - but it's a fun read.

There is an author by the name of Fel, in his Subjugation universe he has two characters that can talk to animals. One is a friend of the main character of the substory (Citadel Online) who has animal telepathy. It starts in the second half of the book and is a minor plot point. The second is in the main Subjugation storyline in the main character,it does not show up until book 6(?) and the ability is more druidic, I think. It is important, but not a constant Dr Doolittle thing . . . Hmm Does 1880s count as "Modern" Hugh Lofting at Gutenberg 5 books

Arlene and Jeff by RoustWriter

In the section where Morales is on the prison planet. Not direct communication but understanding idea/goal. Sorry I can't pin it down more.

Iirc Corsair has at least one swarm cycle story where the MC can communicate with animals.

Going by fading memory, MC is an empath and can feel the death of the animal he killed. I don't know if he goes further down that path - I started reading because of the high score and stopped when I checked the tags.
At 2.7 meg for the two stories it fits your long story request as well.
