Are there any stories where the hero doesn't get the girl?

I don't know what to call this, it's somewhat of a romance but also kind of not. Stories where the MMC and a female character seem like they will end up together but don't in the end?
Or even stories where they at first don't, then they eventually do? I think Brayce Hart has one where the MMC is best friends with a woman who he'd dated years before but she was date raped and ended up pregnant, they eventually got together in the end (though I don't think they should have).
I have no idea how to search for that.

The MMC and "a female character meet in high school and both join the cross country running team, they do well and go on to compete in both middle and long distance running events.
Both earn athletics scholarships to the same university and their relationship continues to develop. However whilst the "female character" regularly wins her races the MMC struggles to place in the top three in any race, so he "identifies as female" and from then on wins every race that the "female character" was winning.
This pisses her right off and she dumps his sorry ass faster than a politician can cash a campaign contribution.

In a great many ways, that describes the general outline of my "Country Boy, City Girl" series. For the first book and half of the second, it seems there is no question who the main character will be with.

Then life happens, and until towards the end of the third book it is largely up in the air as several gals come into and out of his life. Until he finally ends up with one that was introduced at almost the start of the story.

@Mushroom

Yeah, I could see that but your series is just too long for me... I really liked the beginning, where it seemed like it was a sweet story about a country boy and city girl, unfortunately that was all not "real". Once the "worm" turned I struggled to stay the course and then just stopped reading.

I suppose https://storiesonline.net/s/48234/axe-victim by Lellan McLemore matches after a fashion (premier only).

If you are happy with stories along the line of mushroom's

Until he finally ends up with one that was introduced at almost the start of the story.

then several stories by Argon match, as does https://storiesonline.net/s/60513/civility by Jay Cantrell.

In the Summer Camp series by Nick Scipio, who the main character was eventually going to marry was a main issue in the story from very early on, and readers were encouraged to be in one camp or another.
The author, sadly, in the end did not choose the MC's first love (the one I was cheering for). Therefore, in my opinion, the hero did not get THE girl. He did get A girl - just the wrong one, in my opinion.

Dark Days by reluctant_sir is very much like that.

I really really want reluctant_sir to write another sequel to that series. It was one the first I read on this site and I loved it, starts out dark but became lighter as it went. I wanted the MC to succeed, find love, and live happily ever after, it feels like he is on the cusp of that but I don't know if we will actually see it happen.

an argument could be made that most of the Richard Jackson saga consist of stories with Rick losing the girl
