How to optimize a search

I love long stories with good plots and great characters. But I am never sure how to find them. Some I have really liked

Stupid Boy series
Daze in the Valley
John the Genius
Hindsight 20/20
The Defenseman
Florida Friends
A True History
The Smart Girl series
Mayhem
Arlene and Jeff
Good Medicine
The Lady in Red
The Sir Richard books by Banadin
The entire Delta series love that series

So I have read many more than just these whose titles I can't bring to mind at the moment. These are the types of stories I love. But I only ever find them by stumbling onto them.

Oh, I have read all of Ka Hmmd and Pars01 as well.

So, how to I refine my searches to maximize my chances of discovering more great stories like these?

I would suggest using category search. Then just enter in the parameters that you are looking for.

Also, you can check other stories by the authors you like, they often will have other similar ones.

I find that the search isn't productive unless I also exclude the categories and activities I don't want in a story.

That's why you can exclude them. It's a normal part of targeted searching.
I often use exclusions when searching with DuckDuckGo: exclude youtube and some other sites. Just to get most of the garbage results out of the way :)

Its possible that Reviewers could help you. If they reviewed a story you like, perhaps other stories they reviewed might be ones you like. This reviewer liked Banadin's Richard Jackson Saga which you mention.

O.K., let's try this on for size.
I'm an older white American from the South. Used to be conservative but lean more to the liberal side now days.

Love my dog Buddy, wife and kids.

Like older cars, steam engine locomotives and the like. After all, I'm old, what's not to like.

I can't believe we've got this site loaded with great stories just waiting for us. I'll read a good story then check out that writers page to see what else they have given us. As for stories, I'm a romantic at heart. Not necessarily RAC, but BTB only to the degree that she "sinned".
Really enjoy "life stories" like the Living Next Door to Heaven series and the Model Student series. Not into extreme BDSM or S&M. Scat, piss and animal sex, no thanks. Sex with minors, maybe if they are old enough to know what they are doing and want to do it. Raping little kids, no.

And unless the critic can do better job than the writer, maybe they should tread softly.

If you can use advanced search try these functions and sort by size decending:

In the advanced search content search form at the bottom, select 'Extended Query Search' and then in the 'search for' field enter:

@content keyword @storyTags tag

replace keyword with whatever words you want to search for in the text and replace tag with whatever tags you want. You have to spell the tags as they are spelled in the category search page (although I'm not sure if it works in with the categories that contain a slash (like Ma/ft for example)

You can even do the boolean stuff in there. Example:

@content saturn -pluto @storyTags Science Fiction -Aliens

The above:

Search story text for 'Saturn', but exclude any text that contains 'Pluto' and tags contain 'Science fiction' and exclude any tagged with aliens.

There is an easy way to start your quest. Look at the top of the SOL home page. Look for Collections and then List. The information found there may help you narrow your search.
