Proofreader/editor

n8hopkins ๐Ÿšซ

I am curious how one becomes a proofreader/editor on here? I'm not looking to fund my life with this position. I have been an avid reader my whole life. I originally wanter to be a writer, but I have the issue of involuntarily plagiarizing bits and pieces of stuff I've read in the past. I did lead that I enjoy helping others refine their ideas, wording, and punctuation. I don't use AI, and I don't have any feelings one way or the other about it. If anyone needs an extra set of eyes, let me know... [email protected]
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope to hear from people soon.

I first starting editing after I told an author I liked his work but had noticed a few problems, and offered to help with them. He replied that he already had an editor but thanked me for the offer; some time later, he wrote again, saying they had had an "editorial dispute" and asking if the offer was still open. That was about 14 years ago and we're still at it.

Try clicking "Authors/Editors" and then "Become A Volunteer Editor".

Of course, your offer may vanish into the list of volunteer editors, which is cluttered with people who volunteered 20 years ago and never removed their names.

The system asks each volunteer editor to confirm their availability once every two weeks.

If it's longer than two weeks the system doesn't list them.

It might be wise to edit your email from your post, and instead ask for interested authors to contact you by the SOL mail system, to reduce the likelihood of web scrapers harvesting your email for spam lists.

Categories, tags, and even writing styles would be useful. A random forum post "I need an editor" isn't much of an impetus to select them.

There's also the question of when is the editor a proofreader and when is he/she a co-writer?
