Might be asking this in the wrong sub forum, but I need to know how to keep my own chapter layout.
The paragraph breaks get changed by the SOL after I post and it ruins the intended flow of my work by jamming things together when I want a double space to separate the sentences.
Also it removes "returns" where I drop down a line to change speakers.
I use "paste text" to post, and I write and save files as OTD
SOL doesn't recognize indenting (if that's what you mean by paragraph breaks). I have to convert my Word doc (which has indenting and no blank line between paragraphs) for SOL.
I do a global change/replace, changing the paragraph mark to two paragraph marks. This puts a blank line between paragraphs. I don't bother undoing the paragraph indent because the SOL Wizard will ignore it.
When I've made all the formatting changes I need to, I do a "save as" filtered HTML and that's what I submit to SOL. The Wizard will use any HTML formatting it supports (like italics) and ignore all the rest.

I kind of prefer the double space too, but SOL will automatically strip out "excess" white space. There is, as far as I know, no way to bypass this.

You need to be consistent with your paragraph spacing.
Either use one return between all paragraphs, or two returns between all paragraphs.
The system requires two returns between paragraphs to separate them.
If we can visually tell that the author used a single return between paragraphs, we run a script that adds a second return and then process them.
And for scene separation, use ***.
