Issue with epub downloads

This is not a request for a fix, just describing a site behavior you might want to know about. I'm posting publicly in case others have seen something similar.

I read by preference on my Kobo ereader (formerly a Glo, upgraded early this year to a Clara). I especially like that it has a web browser, which allows me to download stories directly, rather than having to d/l to a computer then sideload via cable. It is, however, not the best browser in the world—it's officially a "beta feature" and unsupported, and has been for at least five years. There's no credits/name/version info that I can find, so I don't know what engine it has, and it never saves login sessions or passwords—like I said, not the best browser.

After September's software update, something changed that made direct downloads harder. For some reason, this affected some sites and not others. For example, Archive of Our Own, epub downloads still work fine. Project Gutenberg and Faded Pages, I sometimes have to tap the file link a couple times to get the download to work. And here on SOL, it's completely broken.

When I tap the EPUB link for a story, the site thinks it has handed off a file (it sets my place to the last chapter, just as before and just as when I d/l to computer) but my Kobo never receives it. Multiple taps, still nada. Tapping other controls, such as the one for creating/editing a bookmark, they work fine. There is something about the way SOL hands off the file that's different from other sites, that makes this no longer work.

Anyway, mentioning this now because another Kobo update hasn't changed this behavior. So I thought I'd let you know.

It seems the Kobo reader doesn't follow redirect header.

Whenever you click on an EPUB link, the system sends a redirect header telling the browser/device 'go here to get the download'. A redirect header is a standard thing in the web since the web started almost.

I'll what's involved in bypassing the hand-off and if it can be done, I'll fix it.

That's an odd thing for them to have broken. Thanks for looking into it.
